Book Description
Excerpt from The Complete Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Vol. 3 of 7: Biographia Literaria Hr. Coleridge's means, been actually deprived of it, even for an hour. With regard to the first ground of accusation, it is doubt less to be regretted by every friend of the accused, that he should have adopted so immrtant a portion of the words and thoughts of Schelling without himself making those distinct and accurate references, which he might have known would eventually be te quired as surely as he succeeded in his attempt to recommend the metaphysical doctrines contained in them to the attention of stu dents in'this country. Why did Mr. Coleridge act thus, subjecting himself, as he might well have anticipated, aware as he was of the hostile spirit against his person and principles, that existed in many quarters, to suspicion from the illiberal, and coat ume lious treatment at the hands of the hard and unscrupulous? Why he so acted those who best knew him can well understand, without seeing in his conduct evidence of unconscientiousness: they see the truth of the matter to be this, that to give those distinct and accurate references, for the neglect of which he is now so severely arraigned, would have caused him much trouble of a kind to him peculiarly irksome, and that be dispensed him self from it in the belief, that the general declaration which he had made upon the subject was sufficient both for Schelling and ibr himself. This will be the more intelligible when it is borne in mind, that, as all who knew his literary habits will believe, the passages from Schelling, which he wove into his work, were not transcribedfor the occasion, but merely transferred from his note-book into the text, some of them, in all likelihood, not even from his note-book immediately, but from recollection of its con tents. It is most probable that he mistook some of these trans lated passages for compositions of his own, and quite improbable, as all who know his careless ways will agree, that he should have noted down accurately the particular works and portions of works from which they came. Book Description
Excerpt from The Complete Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Vol. 5 of 7: The Literary Remains; Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit Thus minded, he sought to justify the ways of God to man in the only way in which they can be justified to any one who deals honestly with his conscience, namely, by showing, where possible, their consequence from, and in all cases their cousis teney with, the ideas or truths of the pure reason which is the same in all men. With what success he labored for thirty years in this mighty cause of Christian philosophy, the readers of his other works, especially the Aids to Re ection, will judge: if measured by the number of resolved points of detail his progress may seem small but if tested by the weight and grasp of the principles which he has established, it may be confidently said that since Christianity had a name few men have gone so far. If ever we are to find firm footing in Biblical criticism between the extremes (how often meeting 3) of Socinianism and Popery - if the indisputable facts of physical science are not forever to be left in a sort of admitted antagonism to the supposed asser tions of Scripture - if ever the Christian duty of faith in God through Christ is to be reconciled with the religious service of a being gifted by the same God with reason and a will, and sub jected to a conscience, - it must be effected by the aid, and in the light, of those truths of deepest philosophy which in all Mr. Coleridge's works, published or unpublished, present themselves to the reader with an almost affecting reiteration. But to do justice to those works, and adequately to appreciate the Author's total mind upon any given point, a cursory perusal is insufficient study and comprehension are requisite to an accurate estimate of the relative value of any particular denial or assertion and the apparently desultory and discontinuous form of the observations now presented to the Reader more especially calls for the exercise of his patience and thoughtful circumspection. With this view the Reader is requested to observe the dates which, in some instances, the Editor has been able to affix to the notes with certainty. Most of those on Jeremy Taylor belong to the year 1810, and were especially designed' for the perusal of Charles Lamb. Those on Field were written about 1814; on Hacket, in 1818; on Donne, in 1812 and 1829 on the Pilgrim's Progress, in 1833; and on Hooker and the Book of Common Prayer, between 1820 and 1830. Coleridge's mind was a grow ing and accumulating mind to the last, his whole life one of ln quiry and progressive insight, and the dates of his opinions are therefore in some cases important, and in all interesting. Book Description
Excerpt from The Complete Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Vol. 5 of 7: With an Introductory Essay Upon His Philosophical and Theological Opinions; The Literary Remains; Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit The Editor is deeply sensible of his responsibility in publish ing this Volume as to which he can only say, in addition to a reference to the general authority given by the Author, that to the best of his knowledge and judgment he has not permitted any thing to appear before the public which Mr. Coleridge saw reason to retract; and further express his hope and belief that, with such allowance for defects inherent in the nature of the work as may rightfully be expected from every really liberal mind, nothing contained in the following pages can fairly be a ground of offence to any one. Book Description
Volume 2 of 2. Coleridge's Shorter Works and Fragments brings together a number of substantial essays that were not long enough to require volumes to themselves, among them his "Theory of Life," "Essays on the Principles of Genial Criticism," "Treatise on Method," "Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit," "On the Passions," and "On the Prometheus of Aeschylus." To these are added more than four hundred other pieces, some of them fragementary, many of them previously unpublished, ranging in date from school essays of the early 1790s to a discussion of the bullion controversy in 1834. As might be expected, the subject matter includes literature and language, theology, philosophy, politics, and science, but in many less predicatble topics (such as child labor laws, marriage, suicide, church history, the abolition of slavery, the state of the colonies) also appear. By gathering this material and presenting it in chronological order, Shorter Works and Fragments reveals the development and major characteristics of Coleridge's seemingly inexhaustible variety. H.J. Jackson and J.R. de J. Jackson, Professors of English at the University of Toronto, are the editors of Coleridge's Marginalia and Logic, respectively, in the Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
