Excerpt from The Works of Horace: With English Notes, Critical and Explanatory Now, one of two things: either the youth of Britain, the classical students in the land of Bentley and Person, are very badly taught, and, therefore, want all the aid which cepious commentaries can a 'ord, while our own youth in this respect are so highly favoured as to' need little, if any, assistance at all; or else they, who are intrusted abroad with the educa tion of the young, are so liberal minded, and so far removed from all paltry prejudices, as even to receive a work from a fioreign land, no matter where that land be situated, provided the work in question he found of any utility in the education of the young. The editor will not undertake to decide this very interesting point, but leaves it for the grave considera tion of his countrymen, merely remarking, that the Sallust, Cicero, and Caesar, which are edited on precisely the same plan with the Horace, have all been republished in England, and that too without any effort on his own part to bring about such a result. Horace's life began when the Romans were still living under the forms of the Republic; when it closed, the Einpire was fully established. When our poet first saw the light, Cicero was planning his canvass for the consulship. His boyhood 'fell in the stormy decade of the 'first Trium virate 60 which formed the prelude of the Civil War. Horace was old enough to be interested in the later victories of Caesar in Gaul, and the destruction of Crassus with his army at Carrhae in 5 3 may. Well have made a deep impression on a lad of twelve. The two decades of civil strife which followed were experiences of his youth and early manhood, and when peace came with the deaths of Antony and Cleopatra in 3o, Horace was thirty-five years old. The remaining twenty-two years of his life belong to the first half of the principate of Augustus, the period of the grt and consolidation of his power under the guidance of his two great ministers, Agrippa and Maecenas, whose deaths, I: and 8, were closely followed by that of Horace. But the editor has derived so much advantage from editions of the Classics in which the notes reminded him in particular connections of things which in general he knew before, that he has not inquired so much whether a thing was likely to be known, as whether it was likely to be thought of in the connection.
