This monograph explores the historical processes by which the ancient Near Eastern combat myth-a story of battle between a mighty storm god and a draconic sea monster-became one of early Christianity's key frameworks for interpreting and articulating the significance of Jesus of Nazareth's life and death.Beginning with a survey of extant texts from Mesopotamia to Anatolia, the myth's defining themes, motifs, and structure are established. With these, a clear trajectory is then traced from ancient Israelite myth and cult, through the Prophets, to Jewish apocalypticism and, finally, early Christianity. This analysis provides the context for the remainder of the study: an exegesis of the Gospel of Mark, wherein the role of the combat myth is, for the first time, comprehensively assessed. This investigation shows Mark employing a combat myth typology as the chief thematic and structural basis for his gospel. Jesus is the apocalyptic warrior-and Satan, the cosmic Leviathan.

Adela Yarbro Collins is the Buckingham Professor of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation at the Yale University Divinity School. She was Professor of New Testament in the faculty of the University of Chicago Divinity School from 1991 to 2000; Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame from 1985 to 1991; and a member of the faculty of McCormick Theological Seminary from 1973 to 1985. She holds the Ph.D. from Harvard University in New Testament and Christian Origins and was awarded an honorary doctorate in Theology by the University of Oslo, Norway, in 1994. Professor Collins was awarded a Fellowship for University Teachers by the National Endowment for the Humanities for 1995-96. In addition to her first book, The Combat Myth in the Book of Revelation, she has published Cosmology and Eschatology in Jewish and Christian Apocalypticism; The Beginning of the Gospel: Probings of Mark in Context, Crisis and Catharsis: The Power of the Apocalypse, and The Apocalypse (New Testament Message series). Her current research project is a commentary on the Gospel according to Mark for the Hermeneia commentary series. Professor Collins is serving as a member of the Committee of the Society of New Testament Studies and as the delegate of the Society of Biblical Literature to the American Council of Learned Societies. She was the Editor of the Society of Biblical Literature's Monograph Series from 1985-1990. She has also served on the editorial boards of The Journal of Biblical Literature, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly, New Testament Studies, The Journal for the Study of the New Testament, The Journal of Religion, and Biblical Interpretation.

Is Jesus mythological? And is he a mere product of his cultural milieu? Through narratological and social-scientific analysis of the gospel account, Barber systematically demonstrates that there are two opposing patterns structuring the gospel. The first is the pattern of this world, which is the combat myth, with a typical sequence of motifs having mythological meanings. It is lived out by everyone else in the accounts except Jesus, because this pattern of the world is the pattern of myth-culture, which is the pattern of the old Adam and sin nature. The pattern of Jesus is the pattern intended for Adam to walk in, and is the unique pattern of the new Adam, Jesus Christ. Jesus’s pattern inverts the sequence and subverts the significance of each and every motif and episode of the myth-culture’s pattern. Barber shows that Jesus’s “failure” to conform to this world’s mythological pattern establishes that he is not mythological, and not a product of his culture. As the apostle Peter states, “. . . we did not follow cleverly devised tales [myths] when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty” (2 Pet 1:16).

The author claims that the gospel of Mark is a speech or sermon. To prove this he shows how Mark used many of the elements of Aristotle’s rhetoric. Literary critics noticed these rhetorical features in Mark, but remained with a literary critical model of that gospel instead of a rhetorical view that the evidence called for. They continued to translate the first word of Mark, arché, as "beginning" to provide Mark's story of Jesus with a chronological beginning. The author translates Mark's first word as "guiding principle" to provide Mark's persuasive speech or sermon with a logical starting point.
