Excerpt from The Codex Sangallensis: A Study in the d104 of the Old Latin Gospels The following pages are of interest only to a very small circle of readers. They are concerned with the history and the developments of the early Latin translations of the New Testament; and form an appendix to my recent work on the Codex Bezae. If the results arrived at are somewhat scanty, I do not altogether feel free to withhold them; for the problems which they touch upon are important. Many people are still standing where Augustine stood when he implied that there had been an infinite number of translators of the Gospels. It is time that this position was abandoned, and a number of associated positions; and that we formed a right idea of the nature, time and place of production of the primitive Latin text from which all other Western texts are derived.
