Book Description
Excerpt from The Church in England, Vol. 1 of 2 Another dijj'ereniia arises from the fact that this work is one of a series. If it had stood alone, it would have been necessary to explain more fully the relation of the Church Of England to other Churches in communion with her; but as the history of these sister Churches has already appeared, or will appear, in the same series, 1t has been thought sufficient to touch very lightly upon this important matter, especially as the vast amount of material to be worked up rendered it essential to economize space to the utmost possible degree. It only remains for me to return my hearty thanks to those who have helped me in the work. The President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford (dr. Fowler), has read and revised all that is written about the rise Of the Oxford Colleges, and about the Renaissance the Bishop Of Oxford (dr. Stubbs) has given his Opinion - which to my mind is final - on a matter of essential importance connected with the whole of the history of the early English Church; and the valuable advice of the editor of the series, the Rev. P. H. Ditchfield, has been repeatedly sought, and ungrudgingly given, in all parts Of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 2 The favourable reception which the former part of this work had, together with the new materials that were sent me from noble and worthy hands, have encouraged me to prosecute it, and to carry down the History of the Reformation of this Church till it was brought to a complete settlement in the beginning of queen Elizabeth's reign; which I now offer to the world. The great zeal of this ago for what was done in that, about religion, has made the History of it to be received and read with more than ordinary attention and care: and many have expressed their satisfaction in what was formerly published, by contributing several papers of great consequence to what remained. And since I found no part of the first volume was more universally acceptable, than that wherein I was only a transcriber; I mean the Collection of Records and authentic Papers, which I had set down in confirmation of the more remarkable and doubtful parts of the History; I continue the same method now. I shall repeat nothing here that was in my former preface; but refer the reader to such things as concern this History in general, and my encouragement in the undertaking and prosecution of it, to what is there premised to the whole work: and therefore I shall now enlarge on such things as do more particularly relate to this volume. The papers, that were conveyed to me from several hands, are referred to, as the occasion to mention them occurs in the History, with such acknowledgments as I thought best became this way of writing, though far short of the merits of those who furnished me with them. Book Description
Excerpt from Ecclesiastical History of England, Vol. 2 of 2: The Church of the Restoration The first communication of the story staggered every body. The King did not know what to make of it. Danby, though inclined to use anything he could for party purposes, hardly credited this amazing revelation. Yet, incredible as it may appear, no means seem to have been used at the outset to sift the matter to the bottom.1 Therefore the tale came to be looked at as credible, and. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Church of England, Vol. 2: In the Colonies and Foreign Dependencies of the British Empire The publication of this Volume has been delayed by causes which I could neither foresee nor control; and it is only left for me to hope, that, if God so will, the remainder of the work may be completed with greater expedition. It has been found impossible to bring down the history in this Volume beyond the end of William the Third's reign; a period, which falls far short of that which I had once hoped to reach. But a careful survey of the ground which has been here traversed, will show, I trust, that I have not tarried too long by the way.
