Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian Spectator, Vol. 3: January, 1821 At no period since the commencement of this publication, has the union of the friends of these doctrines appeared more necessary; and the saw mum of friendly regard and assistance, which, from various quarters we have received, induce us to believe that at no period has this union appeared more probable. To illustrate the necessity of united effort, we need only remark, that the enemies of the doctrines of the Reformation are collecting their energies, and meditating a comprehensive system of attack, which demands on our part a corresponding concert of action. In addition to this organized system of attack, there are individuals in every part of our country who are filling the land with cavils against the doctrines of grace, calculated to unsettle the minds of multitudes, and if it were possible, to deceive the very elect. This ubiquity of indefatigable assault, seems to require a like ubiquity of inde fatigable defence. Is it not time then to lift up an ensign which may be seen from east to west, and from north to south, and to sound a trumpet of alarm which shall draw around the standard of our Captain the defenders of his faith? For our part, we cannot meditate on the preparations of the ene my without solicitude, or endure the thought that the battle axe should ring on the gates of Zion before a sentinel awakes, or a note of preparation is heard within. Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian Spectator, Vol. 1: Conducted by an Association of Gentlemen, for the Year 1827 It may be very proper, for a preacher, on particular occasions, for the sake of exciting emotion, to confine himself to a single topic. The practice of the apostles was not inconsistent with this. They vary their mode of address, to adapt it to persons and circumstances. It may be proper to confine the at tention of an awakened sinner, for days, perhaps, to one simple view of his case. But if this does not produce the desired efi'ect, you will In vain hope to deepen his emo tions, by repeating the sarne thoughts in nearly the same forms of expression, after the influence of novelty has ceased. If you would still reach his heart, you must change the nature, or the manner, of your address; without yielding, however, any one point, ia the demands of the law or the gospel. The Christian preacher has no reason to complain, that he -has not an ample field for the ex steiss of his powers, in dealing with sinners; that he has nothing to say to them, but simply Re pent and believe. He may spend alife, in explaining and enforcing even these duties and that, with out treading always in the same beaten track. He may dwell upon every sin which his hearers are re quired to forsake upon every duty which they are bound to perform man every truth which they are commanded to believe.
