The usefulness of the U.S. decennial census depends critically on the accuracy with which individual people are counted in specific housing units, at precise geographic locations. The 2000 and other recent censuses have relied on a set of residence rules to craft instructions on the census questionnaire in order to guide respondents to identify their correct "usual residence." Determining the proper place to count such groups as college students, prisoners, and military personnel has always been complicated and controversial; major societal trends such as placement of children in shared custody arrangements and the prevalence of "snowbird" and "sunbird" populations who regularly move to favorable climates further make it difficult to specify ties to one household and one place. Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place reviews the evolution of current residence rules and the way residence concepts are presented to respondents. It proposes major changes to the basic approach of collecting residence information and suggests a program of research to improve the 2010 and future censuses.

Applied Spatial Data Analysis with R, second edition, is divided into two basic parts, the first presenting R packages, functions, classes and methods for handling spatial data. This part is of interest to users who need to access and visualise spatial data. Data import and export for many file formats for spatial data are covered in detail, as is the interface between R and the open source GRASS GIS and the handling of spatio-temporal data. The second part showcases more specialised kinds of spatial data analysis, including spatial point pattern analysis, interpolation and geostatistics, areal data analysis and disease mapping. Fluorescent materials play a prominent role in the measurement of scientific phenomena. Photodegradation of fluorophores is a process that determines the accuracy and sensitivity of such measurements. Recently, illumination consisting of short pulses has been used to examine the decay of photochemical reaction products. However, the time resolved measurements are difficult to interpret since the photodegradation process usually involves multiple time scales. An econometric model of private land-use decisions is used to project land use to 2030 for each county in the continental U.S. On a nat. scale, forest area is projected to increase overall between 0.1 & 0.2% per year between now & 2030. However, forest area is projected to decrease in a majority of regions, including the key forestry regions of the South & the Pacific Northwest Westside. Urban area is projected to increase by 68 million acres, & cropland, pasture, rangeland, & Conservation Reserve Program land is projected to decline in area.
