Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309164575
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
The usefulness of the U.S. decennial census depends critically on the accuracy with which individual people are counted in specific housing units, at precise geographic locations. The 2000 and other recent censuses have relied on a set of residence rules to craft instructions on the census questionnaire in order to guide respondents to identify their correct "usual residence." Determining the proper place to count such groups as college students, prisoners, and military personnel has always been complicated and controversial; major societal trends such as placement of children in shared custody arrangements and the prevalence of "snowbird" and "sunbird" populations who regularly move to favorable climates further make it difficult to specify ties to one household and one place. Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place reviews the evolution of current residence rules and the way residence concepts are presented to respondents. It proposes major changes to the basic approach of collecting residence information and suggests a program of research to improve the 2010 and future censuses.

Applied Spatial Data Analysis with R
Author: Roger S. Bivand
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461476186
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 414
Book Description
Applied Spatial Data Analysis with R, second edition, is divided into two basic parts, the first presenting R packages, functions, classes and methods for handling spatial data. This part is of interest to users who need to access and visualise spatial data. Data import and export for many file formats for spatial data are covered in detail, as is the interface between R and the open source GRASS GIS and the handling of spatio-temporal data. The second part showcases more specialised kinds of spatial data analysis, including spatial point pattern analysis, interpolation and geostatistics, areal data analysis and disease mapping. The coverage of methods of spatial data analysis ranges from standard techniques to new developments, and the examples used are largely taken from the spatial statistics literature. All the examples can be run using R contributed packages available from the CRAN website, with code and additional data sets from the book's own website. Compared to the first edition, the second edition covers the more systematic approach towards handling spatial data in R, as well as a number of important and widely used CRAN packages that have appeared since the first edition. This book will be of interest to researchers who intend to use R to handle, visualise, and analyse spatial data. It will also be of interest to spatial data analysts who do not use R, but who are interested in practical aspects of implementing software for spatial data analysis. It is a suitable companion book for introductory spatial statistics courses and for applied methods courses in a wide range of subjects using spatial data, including human and physical geography, geographical information science and geoinformatics, the environmental sciences, ecology, public health and disease control, economics, public administration and political science. The book has a website where complete code examples, data sets, and other support material may be found: http://www.asdar-book.org. The authors have taken part in writing and maintaining software for spatial data handling and analysis with R in concert since 2003.

Modeling of Photochemical Reactions in a Focused Laser Beam
Author: A. K. Gaigalas
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428988246
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 106
Book Description
Fluorescent materials play a prominent role in the measurement of scientific phenomena. Photodegradation of fluorophores is a process that determines the accuracy and sensitivity of such measurements. Recently, illumination consisting of short pulses has been used to examine the decay of photochemical reaction products. However, the time resolved measurements are difficult to interpret since the photodegradation process usually involves multiple time scales. The frequency domain measurement technique discussed here looks at the frequency response of a fluorescent sample to a frequency modulate illuminating light. In the measurements described here, a focused laser beam is used to illuminate a sample of slowly flowing fluorescent solution. Illus.

Linking Land-use Projections and Forest Fragmentation Analysis
Author: Andrew J. Plantinga
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428987711
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 744
Book Description
An econometric model of private land-use decisions is used to project land use to 2030 for each county in the continental U.S. On a nat. scale, forest area is projected to increase overall between 0.1 & 0.2% per year between now & 2030. However, forest area is projected to decrease in a majority of regions, including the key forestry regions of the South & the Pacific Northwest Westside. Urban area is projected to increase by 68 million acres, & cropland, pasture, rangeland, & Conservation Reserve Program land is projected to decline in area. Regional econometric models are needed to better represent region-specific economic relationships. County-level models of forest fragmentation indices are estimated for the Western U.S. Illus.
