Book Description
Excerpt from Social Evils: And Their Remedy Perhaps in the opinion of some of my readers I have said too little, in the foregoing narratives, of the principles of political economy. It is well, I fully agree, that sound principles of political economy should be clearly understood by all ranks of society; but it is of vital importance that they should be able to turn to a remedy of far more powerful influence. Many of their difficulties and dangers can only be met by "a great strength of sound religious principle," to use the words of the celebrated Horsley, "in private life." It seems to me, however, that I have scarcely brought this glorious remedy sufficiently forward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Great Social Evil: Its Causes, Extent, Results, and Remedies Douglas Jerrold also favoured me with the following note - West Lodge, Putney, London, Jan. 27, 1845. Dm Sm, I had already read your valuable and earnest pamphlet, and am happy to have the opportunity of thank ing its author for the mournful interest which it excited in me. The picture drawn in it is so terrible, but its exhibition must do great good. That any literary exertions of mine should meet with the sympathy and approval of men, im pressed like yourself for the alleviation of infirm and wronged humanity, is the best and most sufiicing reward - Yours sincerely, Douous J snow. Book Description
Excerpt from Social Evils, Their Causes and Cure: Being a Brief Discussion of the Social Status, With Reference to Methods of Reform The load of evils which burdens American society at present is in dark contrast with the progressive institutions which place this people in advance of all others, and serve as a light to guide the nations on to liberty and enlighten ment. These evils appall philanthropists who would fain apply the remedies for their removal, and often discourage philanthropic effort, when a full view is taken of their wide spread influences. To undermine and destroy them appears like a more Herculean task than the cleansing of the Augean stables of old; and whoever lifts a hand to this work in earnest, needs, like Hercules, to be strong for the work neither faint-hearted nor weak-handed. These studies need. Not be followed closely with reference to the time element. In fact, several of the studies may be considerably extended. Fifteen studies will prove none too many for the same material, if clubs can be organized to meet for so long a period. Book Description
Excerpt from The Cure of the Great Social Evil: With Special Reference to Recent Laws Delusively Called Contagious Diseases' Acts The English fallen women who frequent the Haymarket and other similar resorts, speak with the utmost abhorrence of the bestiality of the foreign women perambulating the same neighbourhoods. The Committee have known more than one instance where the loathing produced by the habits of the women has led English girls to a desire to escape the abomina. Tions incident to a continuance in a career of sin. It is not amiss to add, that a private International Society of ladies is rising on the Continent, to put down the heart breaking and disgusting enormities of the system, which amiable materialists are straining every nerve to impose upon England.
