The science of "soft rock" geology emerged in the nineteenth century when it became widely known that sedimentary rocks are the result of erosion, transport and deposition of ancient sediment, often by water. It was recognized that modern sediments are typically laid down on top of older ones and that ancient rocks could be interpreted in a similar way.
