Book Description
Excerpt from The Case of the Established Church of Ireland This makes a most important difference. I grant, that if the Ecclesiastical persons alone were concerned, it might be very reasonable to say, - These men have no right or title to the incomes which they enjoy beyond their own lives; and provided the same amount is secured to them for that time, they suffer no injury or injustice, if a different appropriation of their incomes is made, when they are taken away. But this is putting out of sight the important fact that they are not the Church, but a part, and a small part of it. Little flock to belooked after, and the little school where their children met for daily instruction to be cared for and attended to; a school too that uired not a attention and care: and although it was certainly a variety and refreshment to turn from studying old records, and translating stif and cranky Latin, to breathe the mountain air in a six miles walk for the post, or to give a lesson in the Parables. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of Ireland: A Historical Sketch I have endeavoured to give, in the following pages, a concise and, at the same time, an accurate account of the changes through which the Church of Ireland has passed during the last fourteen hundred years. The subject upon which I have ventured to write has occupied my attention for several years past; and I have laid under tribute every scrap of information which I thought could throw some light upon it. There are, no doubt, many very valuable books in existence which deal with Irish Church History; but it will be found that these books have been written for scholars, and are not easily accessible to general readers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ancient Irish Church Perhaps the greatest interest of all will be felt by those who, rejoicing in the liberty of a reformed faith and an emancipated Church, will see in Ireland the last of the Western Churches to acknowledge the supremacy of, the pope. When all other parts of Western Europe had already for centuries acknow ledged his sway, Ireland was still independent. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of Ireland While these sheets were passing through the press the Church of Ireland suffered a grievous loss in the death of the learned and accomplished Dr. Reeves, Bishop of Down, Connor, and Dromore, who was without a rival in his acquaintance with the ecclesiastical literature of Ireland. Up to the last, notwithstanding his many engagements, he found time with his usual kindness to read the proofs of this work for me. The essay on S. Patrick (Appendix A.) had not then been reached by the printer, but before any part of the work went to the press I had sent this to the Bishop in manuscript. I felt doubtful as to how he would receive it, as it differs considerably from previous theories on the subject. I was, however, much gratified when he assured me of the pleasure with which he read the argument. I hope it will be found to throw some light on a difficult subject. The Bishop has been taken from us, in the Providence of God, when he could ill be spared, and I deeply regret that it is now not in my power to thank him for the help he so willingly gave me. Book Description
Excerpt from The Irish Church: A Political View of the Question Church's bitterest foes, and supported with all their power by the enemies of all true religion in this country, and to seek instead such an amelioration of the existing relations of Church and State, as will give the Church an adequate voice in the regulation of her own affairs and so remove most of the existing evils of which we complain. Patience under trial is God's way to good. Impatient. Action may end in deplorable and lasting evil. We have said nothing here about Disendowment. Its effect can best be described in the words of the Bishop of Lincoln, In my Diocese, said the Bishop, it would pauperise the Priesthood and paganise the poor. Book Description
Excerpt from The Case of the Church of Ireland Stated: In a Letter Respectfully Addressed to His Excellency the Marquess Wellesley, and in Reply to the Charges of J. K. L Tithes in this country, my Lord, should always have been odious; they were the price paid by Henry II. And the legate Paparo to the Irish prelates, who sold for them the independence of their native land and the birth-right of their people: until that period, tithes were almostsun known in this country, and from the day of their introduction, we may date the history of our mis fortunes they. Were not the only cause, but they were an efficient one, of all the calamities which followed; and whilst they subsist, peace and cons cord will not be reestablished in Ireland.
