The Mifchief always bears a Proportion to the Quality of the Fraud and the Sphere in which it moves: If it be baited for privateandflpart'iculai Men, the Influence aifo is private and particular, and no Man fufi'ers but he that Swallows the Gudgeon. But if it be laid for the Publick; if the Defign be againfi the Confiituti'on, if a Nation, or a Church, are to be' couzen'g, the whole is in Jeopard and the Men of Honefiy and Penetration, who fee through 31 the Difguifes, ' are equally in volv'd in the Common Danger though notjin the Guilt and F01 ly they are overwhelm'd with the Knavery and Felly of the tell, and their feeing and difcover'ingthe Snares and Traps, will nor prevent. Their being catch'd, but only augment the Smart of it, and their forefight borh antcdates and inflames the fery.
