The creation of the Museum of the Friars Minor Capuchin of the Roman Province is designed to highlight the spirituality of a religious order whose cornerstones are intense mysticism, a simple and sober way of life, constant involvement with people, and a strong but gentle spirit of brotherly love. The eight rooms of the museum set up inside the friary host a series of sections devoted to its origins and history as well as the life of those who joined the order and drew inspiration from the example of extraordinary Capuchin saints like Felix of Cantalice, Crispin of Viterbo and Joseph of Leonessa but also contemporary figures known to the public on a vast scale, such as St Pio of Pietrelcina, who bore the stigmata for fifty years, and Father Mariano of Turin, the first multimedia preacher.The museum is also a new repository for the artistic and historical legacy of the Capuchins of Rome and the region of Lazio, as its rooms are in fact designed not only to house and exhibit the various items but also to ensure their preservation. To this end, the opening of the museum was preceded by major work to restore the original splendour not only of various kinds of artworks, books and documents but also and above all Capuchin liturgical vessels and articles of everyday use epitomizing the spirit of humble self-sufficiency that is the hallmark of the order. Encapsulating the extraordinarily rich experience of nearly 500 years of Capuchin life, this museum is concerned not only with preserving the past but also with projecting itself into the future as a sort of ongoing laboratory of initiatives, a venue for exhibitions, cultural events and spiritual experiences aimed at establishing dialogue and asserting the continuing primacy of the human dimension today.

The past century has born witness to a growing interest in the belief systems of ancient Europe, with an array of contemporary Pagan groups claiming to revive these old ways for the needs of the modern world. Notwithstanding the wealth of material published about St Clare of Assisi (1193-1253) in the context of medieval scholarship, and the wealth of visual material regarding her, there is a dearth of published scholarship concerning her cult in the early modern period. This work examines the representations of St Clare in the Italian visual tradition from the thirteenth century on, but especially between the fifteenth and the mid-seventeenth centuries, in the context of mendicant activity. Through an examination of such diverse visual images as prints, drawings, panels, sculptures, minor arts, and frescoes in relation to sermons of Franciscan preachers, starting in the thirteenth century but focusing primarily on the later tradition of early modernity, the book highlights the cult of women saints and its role in the reform movements of the Osservanza and the Catholic Reformation and in the face of Muslim-Christian encounter of the early modern era. Susan Zuccotti narrates the life and work of Père Marie-Benoît, a courageous French Capuchin priest who risked everything to hide Jews in France and Italy during the Holocaust. Who was this extraordinary priest and how did he become adept at hiding Jews, providing them with false papers, and helping them to elude their persecutors? From monasteries first in Marseille and later in Rome, Père Marie-Benoît worked with Jewish co-conspirators to build remarkably effective Jewish-Christian rescue networks. Acting independently without Vatican support but with help from some priests, nuns, and local citizens, he and his friends persisted in their clandestine work until the Allies liberated Rome. After the conflict, Père Marie-Benoît maintained his wartime Jewish friendships and devoted the rest of his life to Jewish Christian reconciliation. Papal officials viewed both activities unfavorably until after the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II), 1962-1965. To tell this remarkable tale, in addition to her research in French and Italian archives, Zuccotti personally interviewed Père Marie-Benoît, his family, Jewish rescuers with whom he worked, and survivors who owed their lives to his network.
