Book Description
Ecotourism has become an attractive tourism-related activity for communities and conservationists across Canada. It provides an alternative source of income for communities, thereby diversifying their economies. It appeals to conservationists because it entails fewer cultural and environmental disruptions than other forms of tourism (such as adventure tourism, mass tourism, and nature tourism). Despite the increased focus on ecotourism, there is considerable debate about its definition. In this report we present and explore the competing definitions of this term, and introduce a working definition of ecotourism. We then examine ecotourism as a product and market segment and review the ecotourism market and profile. Finally, we examine applications and practices of ecotourism, with an emphasis on Canadian ecotourism studies.

Book Description
Ecotourism is recognized as a distinct form of tourism because it links low impacts on the resource base and host community, environmental conservation, sustainable economic activity, and distinctive behaviour and learning by the consumer. It is practised in many countries, perhaps most evidently in developing nations such as Costa Rica, Thailand, and Nepal. This document presents a context for ecotourism. It discusses ecotourism in Canada, establishing codes for ecotourism, and the scope for public policy.

Book Description
Focuses on forest-based ecotourism activities and identifies those opportunities that are desired by the visitors who make up the latent ecotourism market for northern Ontario. The methodology involved a random mailed survey of 2,000 potential ecotourists in the United States and Canada, selected from members of nature oriented recreation co-operatives. Analyses of respondent preferences for different activities, settings, and outcomes are presented. The relationships between socio-demographic factors and potential ecotourism demand are also examined, based on results of a series of chi-square tests.

Canadian Heritage and other agencies commissioned a study to assess the potential markets for ecotourism in British Columbia. This report presents the results from the study component that conducted a telephone survey of the ecotourism travel trade. The report includes a description of the travel trade and its ecotourism product offerings, client characteristics and trip preferences, and the potential for Alberta and British Columbia as ecotourism destinations. The report also notes emerging market trends in ecotourism and summarizes the results of group discussions with travel trade representatives on their perceptions and observations of nature/adventure and cultural tourism.
