Book Description
Excerpt from The Canadian Almanac, and Repository of Useful Knowledge, for the Year 1894, Being the Second After Leap Year: Containing Full and Authentic Commercial, Statistical, Astronomical, Departmental, Ecclesiastical, Educational, Financial, and General Information As evening and morning star, Venus attains great brilliancy, owing to her vicinity to the Sun. This brilliance, added to her dense atmosphere, makes her also a difficult object to study satisfactorily in a tele scope. Little is certainly known oi her surface, but it is supposed to be varied by land and water. Some observers are confident they have glimpsed very high mountains. Venus presents phases like Mercury and the Moon, some of them very beautiful. For the astronomer, her chief valu'e consists in her transits of the Sun's disc, which occur in pairs, eight years apart, and at intervals of about 120 years. By means of these transits, the Sun's distance from the Earth is measured, though Mars and a few of the brightest asteroids are occasionally used for that purpose and are preferred by some astronomers.
