Book Description
An illustrated military biography by Blucher's Quarter-Master General Blücher was born in Rostock on the northern Baltic coast of Germany in 1742. By 1758 he was a young hussar in the service of Sweden which had occupied the region. After being taken prisoner by the Prussians in 1760, he joined the Prussian Army, but was forced to resign for insubordination. A farmer until 1786, he returned to the army, rising in rank to lieutenant-general by 1801, to fight the armies of revolutionary, and subsequently Napoleonic, France. Driven by genuine hatred, he fought relentlessly despite many setbacks and his advancing years. In 1813 at Leipzig, the 'Battle of the Nations', an allied army under his command achieved a long awaited victory. Napoleon's fortunes were in decline and in 1814 Blucher and his Prussians pressed on through north-eastern France to bring about the downfall of the First Empire of the French. Field Marshal Blücher is primarily remembered for his cooperation with the Duke of Wellington during the 'Hundred Days' campaign in 1815, which resulted in the allied victory at Waterloo and the final downfall of Napoleon. This book is an excellent and intimate biography of Blucher's military career to 1815 by one who knew him well. It has been enhanced in this Leonaur edition by the inclusion of many illustrations, many by the renowned British military illustrator Richard Caton-Woodville, making this book ideal reference material for modellers, uniform and costume students etc. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book Description
One of the most colorful characters in the Napoleonic pantheon, Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742–1819) is best known as the Prussian general who, along with the Duke of Wellington, defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Throughout his long career, Blücher distinguished himself as a bold commander, but his actions at times appeared erratic and reckless. This magnificent biography by Michael V. Leggiere, an award-winning historian of the Napoleonic Wars, is the first scholarly book in English to explore Blücher’s life and military career—and his impact on Napoleon. Drawing on exhaustive research in European archives, Leggiere eschews the melodrama of earlier biographies and offers instead a richly nuanced portrait of a talented leader who, contrary to popular perception, had a strong grasp of military strategy. Nicknamed “Marshal Forward” by his soldiers, he in fact retreated more often than he attacked. Focusing on the campaigns of 1813, 1814, and 1815, Leggiere evaluates the full effects of Blücher’s operations on his archenemy. In addition to providing military analysis, Leggiere draws extensively from Blücher’s own writings to reveal the man behind the legend. Though tough as nails on the outside, Blücher was a loving family man who deplored the casualties of war. This meticulously written biography, enhanced by detailed maps and other illustrations, fills a large gap in our understanding of a complex man who, for all his flaws and eccentricities, is justly credited with releasing Europe from the yoke of Napoleon’s tyranny.

Book Description
Authorized translation from the German. Contains 100 maps. Includes various battles which the author analyzes along with military theories. Convinced that Germany, surrounded by powerful enemies, would have to fight outnumbered and win, Schlieffen believed the key to victory could be discovered in an account of the Battle of Cannae, written by the German military historian Hans Delbruck. Therefore, Schlieffen ordered the historical section of the General Staff to produce a set of "Cannae Studies" that would demonstrate that the principle of double envelopment practiced by Hannibal at Cannae was the master key to victory in battle.
