Book Description
The first of three books in an exciting new series, The Book of Harry Potter Trifles, Trivias and Particularities is designed to delight and challenge Potter fans of all ages. Its nine quests, each built around a different aspect of wizardry - Hogwarts and Academia, Potions and Spells, Magical Menagerie, and others - contain questions in three skill levels: Salamander, Phoenix, and Dragon. These magical creatures increase in size, just as the questions increase in difficulty. All are associated with the element of fire, which is said to govern leadership, enthusiasm, and competitiveness, making it an ideal theme for question difficulty. An answer key at the end of each quest allows readers to check their answers by question number, with the source of the answer cited according to book and chapter number. Scattered throughout, hints and intriguing trivia tidbits, including little-known historical facts referenced in the Potter series, keep readers informed, engaged, and entertained.

Book Description
This collection of fresh essays addresses a broad range of topics in the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who, both old (1963-1989) and new (2005-present). The book begins with the fan: There are essays on how the show is viewed and identified with, fan interactions with each other, reactions to changes, the wilderness years when it wasn't in production. Essays then look at the ways in which the stories are told (e.g., their timeliness, their use of time travel as a device, etc.). After discussing the stories and devices and themes, the essays turn to looking at the Doctor's female companions and how they evolve, are used, and changed by their journey with the Doctor.

Book Description
This is a Harry Potter quiz book like no other. It won't be asking you questions like "what school did Harry Potter go to?" (If you are a Harry Potter fan, then of course you know the answer ) Rather it asks questions which will develop your literary appreciation of the Harry Potter books and your general knowledge of the Harry Potter phenomenon. Some of these questions are easy, quite a few are fiendishly difficult, and several of them really don't have simple answers, but thinking about possible answers is what it is all about. Work through this quiz book (with an eye on the answers) and come out the other end with a much better understanding of the phenomenon that is Harry Potter. After each question, space is provided in which you may jot down your preliminary answer. In this quiz book there is a focus on the language used by J. K. Rowling. From alchemy to whomping via such gems as hallows and knickerbockers the books use a range of words which are not part of the everyday word stock of most speakers of English, and certainly not of most children. True fans of the Harry Potter series will want to know them There is a mass of information around the world of Harry Potter, some of it trivia (but fun ), some key to our appreciation of the books. Also fans have realized that the books have some serious points to make. No book achieves anything approaching the success of the Harry Potter series unless it includes something that makes us all think. This Harry Potter Quiz Book aims to draw your attention to some of these big questions. Knowing the name of Harry Potter's school is not likely to change the life of any one of us, but thinking about the moral issues raised in the books might do just that.

Usually I don't mind 'cos some of my best, most brilliant ideas have come from sitting in detention. But recently it feels like no one believes me about anything - even when I'm telling the truth! And it's only gotten worse since I played a prank on the old man who lives in the park. Everyone thinks I'm just a bully. They don't believe I could be a hero. But I'm going to prove them all wrong... Told from the perspective of a bully, this book explores themes of bullying and homelessness, while celebrating kindness, friendship and the potential everyone has to change for the good.

Book Description
“Dictionary, n: A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.” Bierce’s groundbreaking Devil’s Dictionary had a complex publication history. Started in the mid-1800s as an irregular column in Californian newspapers under various titles, he gradually refined the new-at-the-time idea of an irreverent set of glossary-like definitions. The final name, as we see it titled in this work, did not appear until an 1881 column published in the periodical The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp. There were no publications of the complete glossary in the 1800s. Not until 1906 did a portion of Bierce’s collection get published by Doubleday, under the name The Cynic’s Word Book—the publisher not wanting to use the word “Devil” in the title, to the great disappointment of the author. The 1906 word book only went from A to L, however, and the remainder was never released under the compromised title. In 1911 the Devil’s Dictionary as we know it was published in complete form as part of Bierce’s collected works (volume 7 of 12), including the remainder of the definitions from M to Z. It has been republished a number of times, including more recent efforts where older definitions from his columns that never made it into the original book were included. Due to the complex nature of copyright, some of those found definitions have unclear public domain status and were not included. This edition of the book includes, however, a set of definitions attributed to his one-and-only “Demon’s Dictionary” column, including Bierce’s classic definition of A: “the first letter in every properly constructed alphabet.” Bierce enjoyed “quoting” his pseudonyms in his work. Most of the poetry, dramatic scenes and stories in this book attributed to others were self-authored and do not exist outside of this work. This includes the prolific Father Gassalasca Jape, whom he thanks in the preface—“jape” of course having the definition: “a practical joke.” This book is a product of its time and must be approached as such. Many of the definitions hold up well today, but some might be considered less palatable by modern readers. Regardless, the book’s humorous style is a valuable snapshot of American culture from past centuries. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
