Book Description
This book is a collection of poems by Jasmine Isar that touches upon myriad aspects of life. Some of them deal with her dreams (childhood or as an adult) or her feelings for her loved ones while others give a brief glimpse into the social and environmental evils such as female feticide and deforestation. The real trigger behind Jasmines poems is actually her ability to discern the soul behind the mundane day-to-day happenings. This is conspicuous in the poems The Lost Lullabies, Life is a Butterfly, and The Winsome Smile. How often do we really spend time thinking about that child who tries to earn a living selling flowers at the traffic signals, be it rain or storm, and appreciate her relentless pursuit? Or something as common as a butterfly with its vibrant colors going about its job, hopping from flower to flower. Or the vendors we encounter while commuting in the train to the office. Jasmines empathy toward the fairer sex pours out in the renditions of Fortune Redefined and Winds of Change. The continued atrocities toward a female child even before it comes into our world and unflinching hope of emerging successful through sustained struggle is showcased vividly in these poems. Our loved ones are always an inspiration for us in numerous ways and more so for people having the art of expressing them in the form of poetry. As with every daughter, the father holds a special place, and Jasmine has expressed her love for her ailing father in a very heart-wrenching ode in Faith Begets Hope. Overall, the book is a collage of various moods and expressions that are experienced every day that one would not want to miss. Brolliology
Author: Marion Rankine
Publisher: Melville House
ISBN: 1612196705
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
A fun, illustrated history of the umbrella's surprising place in life and literature Humans have been making, using, perfecting, and decorating umbrellas for millennia--holding them over the heads of rulers, signalling class distinctions, and exploring their full imaginative potential in folk tales and novels. In the spirit of the best literary gift books, Brolliology is a beautifully designed and illustrated tour through literature and history. It surprises us with the crucial role that the oft-overlooked umbrella has played over centuries--and not just in keeping us dry. Marion Rankine elevates umbrellas to their rightful place as an object worthy of philosophical inquiry. As Rankine points out, many others have tried. Derrida sought to find the meaning (or lack thereof) behind an umbrella mentioned in Nietzsche's notes, Robert Louis Stevenson wrote essays on the handy object, and Dickens used umbrellas as a narrative device for just about everything. She tackles the gender, class, and social connotations of carrying an umbrella and helps us realize our deep connection to this most forgettable everyday object--which we only think of when we don't have one.

Women’s Literary Tradition and Twentieth-Century Hungarian Writers
Author: Anna Menyhért
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004417494
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 361
Book Description
In Women’s Literary Tradition and Twentieth-Century Hungarian Writers, Anna Menyhért presents the cases of five women writers whose legacy literary criticism has neglected or distorted, thereby depriving succeeding generations of vital cultural memory and inspiration. A best-selling novelist and poet in her time, Renée Erdős wrote innovatively about women's experience of sexual love. Minka Czóbel wrote modern trauma texts only to pass into literary history branded, as a result of ideological pressure in communist times, as an 'ugly woman'. Ágnes Nemes Nagy, celebrated for her ‘masculine’ poems, felt she must suppress her ‘feminine’ poems. Famous writer’s widow Ilona Harmos Kosztolányi’s autobiographical writing tackles the physical challenges of girls' adolescence, and offers us a woman’s thoughtful Holocaust memoir. Anna Lesznai, émigrée and visual artist, wove together memory and fiction using techniques from patchworking and embroidery.
