Islands offer unusual opportunities for studying theoretical concepts in ecology. I studied the role of island size and isolation in structuring assemblages of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on the islands and adjacent mainland of Lac la Ronge, Saskatchewan, Canada. Carabid beetles were collected on 30 islands (0.2 - 980.7 ha in size, 0.13 - 10.7 km from mainland) and five mainland sites using pitfall traps throughout the frost-free season. Carabid body size, wing length and seasonal activity information was obtained from the literature. In wing-dimorphic species, wing length was diagnosed by removing the elytra and subsequent dissections to determine the condition of flight muscles. Island size was an important factor affecting beetle assemblage, diversity, and population processes on islands. Island isolation did not negatively influence diversity at the scales examined in this study. Life history characteristics of species such as body size, wing length, and breeding period significantly influenced the distribution of beetles on islands. This work suggests that small islands experience greater turnover of carabids, particularly large-bodied flightless species, and that this may account for the island area effect observed in this island system.

Carabid ground beetles, sometimes called "walking jewels", are among the most thoroughly investigated insects in the world. This book presents the results of molecular phylogenetic analyses of 2000 specimens, including 350 species and that cover more than 90% of the known genera, from 500 localities in 35 countries. These comprehensive analyses using mitochondrial DNA-based dating suggest that carabid diversification took place about 40 to 50 million years ago as an explosive radiation of the major genera, coinciding with the collision of the Indian subcontinent and Eurasian land mass. The analyses also lead to surprising conclusions suggesting discontinuous evolution and parallel morphological evolution. This open access book presents and analyzes the results of more than 30 years of long-term ecological research in riparian forest ecosystems with the aim of casting light on changes in the dynamics of riparian forests over time. The research, focusing on the Ooyamazawa riparian forest, one of the remaining old-growth forests in Japan, has yielded a number of interesting outcomes. First, it shows that large-scale disturbances afford various trees opportunities for regeneration and are thus the driving force for the coexistence of canopy trees in riparian forests. The 101 Mecyclothorax carabid beetle species of Tahiti, French Polynesia comprise a very diverse adaptive radiation. Given Tahiti?s surface area of only 1,045 km2, the island?s Mecyclothorax fauna represents the densest, most diverse radiation of species on Earth. Speciation of Tahitian Mecyclothorax has also occurred very rapidly, with closely-related species allopatrically distributed across geographic ranges defined by Tahiti?s incredibly complex geological topography. Such high levels of endemism are useful for conservation management, as continuing presence of these beetles in small areas of Tahitian forest can signify good health of the native biota in those areas. This taxonomic revision includes dichotomous keys and diagnostic photographs supporting identification of all 101 species, over one-quarter newly described in this publication. Each species treatment includes ecological and geographical information. This monograph illuminates an important component of Tahitian biodiversity in support of ongoing efforts to conserve Tahiti?s biological resources.
