This book will transport you from the beginning of creation to the end of the universe, as narrated in this new edition collection of early short stories by pulp legend and prolific science fiction author John Russell Fearn. From the benevolent ambitions of Professor Renhard and a machine that stops dust, to an accident at the hands of Dr. Anderson, there are ruinous consequences. The one man who might be able to provide a solution is locked in an asylum and it soon becomes apparent that meddling with the equilibrium of nature can be a fatal mistake. Such dilemmas continue to emerge. Messages are left from a universe beyond our own; mesmerism, madness and murder combine to solve the problems of a villain, and a puzzling walnut reveals horrifying patterns of mutation. Monsters, heroes and alternate dimensions are effortlessly portrayed in these thrilling and thought provoking tales. Praise for John Russell Fearn: "... A pioneer of science fiction [...] he was one of the Greats of the earlier ages, and his name should be there with Hugo Gernsback, John W. Campbell, Stanley G. Weinbaum, Murray Leinster, and all the others whose thoughts and works formulated today's modern science fiction." - John Carnell, New Worlds John Russell Fearn was an extremely prolific and popular British writer, who began in the American pulps, then almost single-handedly drove the post-World War II boom in British publishing with a flood of science fiction, detective stories, westerns, and adventure fiction. He was so popular that one of his pseudonyms became the editor of Vargo Staten's Science Fiction Magazine in the 1950's. His work is noted for its vigor and wild imagination. He has always had a substantial cult following and has been popular in translation around the world.

Book Description
BEFORE EARTH CAME launches a new series collecting the early pioneering pulp magazine novelettes of John Russell Fearn, with the first-ever reprinting of "Before Earth Came" and "Subconscious." Both stories abound with unbridled imagination and a sense of wonder, examples of the pioneering stories being written in SF more than 80 years ago. In "Before Earth Came," Fearn’s storyline of how alien scientists, facing the imminent utter destruction of their planet, seek to preserve their heritage by sending it to Earth, was later copied by the creators of Superman. And "Subconscious" was one of the very first SF stories to utilize the theory of Charles Fort that "We are Property!" ... a theme that has echoed down science fiction ever since!

Book Description
James Gunn--one of the founding figures of science fiction scholarship and teaching--wrote in 1951 what is likely the first master's thesis on modern science fiction. Portions were in the short-lived pulp magazine Dynamic but it has otherwise remained unavailable. Here in its first full publication, the thesis explores many of the classic Golden Age stories of the 1940s and the critical perspective that informed Gunn's essential genre history Alternate Worlds and his anthology series The Road to Science Fiction. The editor's introduction and commentary show the historical significance of Gunn's work and its relevance to today's science fiction studies.
