The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of hound dog. The name 'Basset' is derived from the French word 'bas, ' which translates to 'low, ' which is an obvious reference to the breeds low body. The breed was developed to have an incredible sense of smell and therefore falls under the scent hound family of dog. The Basset Hound was originally developed to hunt hare and other small animals. It is believed that the Basset Hound's sense of smell, for tracking purposes, is second only to the Bloodhound. The breed normally has a bicolored or tricolored coat of standard hound colorations (black, white, tan and off-lemon yellow). The breed has a medium-short coat that has a hard but smooth texture.
