Narrating from the Archive describes the historical development of the archival novel, a fictional genre in which the narrative stores records, bureaucratic writing informs language, and the archive frames the readers' apprehension of the text. Archival novels have been written in two distinct paradigms--legitimation and challenge. While in the former paradigm the archive guarantees the novel's verisimilitude, in the latter the archive is questioned as a hierarchized and politically biased system for establishing truth. In this book, Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi, Honore de Balzac's Ursule Mirouet and Le Colonel Chabert, are examples of novels written within the paradigm of legitimation; while Gustave Flaubert's Bouvard et Pecuchet permits the transition between the two paradigms, George Perece's La vie mode d'emploi and Don DeLillo's Libra represent cases of archival fiction written within the paradigm of challenge.

Mumbai's textile industry is commonly but incorrectly understood to be an extinct relic of the past. In The Archive of Loss Maura Finkelstein examines what it means for textile mill workers—who are assumed not to exist—to live and work during a period of deindustrialization. Finkelstein shows how mills are ethnographic archives of the city where documents, artifacts, and stories exist in the buildings and in the bodies of workers. Workers' pain, illnesses, injuries, and exhaustion narrate industrial decline; the ways in which they live in tenements exist outside and resist the values expounded by modernity; and the rumors and untruths they share about textile worker strikes and a mill fire help them make sense of the industry's survival. By entering and critically re-activating the Zionist photographic archive established by the Division of Journalism and Propaganda of the Jewish National Fund, this research examines its rippling impact on civil landscapes prior to 1948 in Palestine, and its lasting impact on the region to date. This study argues that the Zionist movement makes particular use of the machinery of the photographic archive, aiming to constitute the boundaries of Palestine as a Jewish state, claiming ownership over the land and announcing internationally the success of its enterprise, thus substantiating the image it sought to embed as the “reality” of the land. This archive was not stand-alone, as it was functioning in relation to a vast, complicated network of organizational systems and technologies, in the Middle East and across the world. Crucially, this system functioned as a national archive in future tense, for a nation-state that was not yet in existence, seeking to substantiate its regional authority and shape its cultural repository, outlining parameters for inclusion and exclusion from its civic space. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, photography history, visual culture, Jewish studies, Israel studies and Middle East studies.
