Book Description
Excerpt from The Barbizon School of Painters: Corot, Rousseau, Diaz, Millet, Daubigny, Etc The pictures painted by the group of French artists who lived around Ban, bizon, have been for many years the admiration of the artistic world. But very little has yet been done to tell their story, and it is the aim of this volume to set forth the biographies of these artists, illustrated with such representa tions of their works as will give an adequate conception of their methods and achievements. Personal knowledge of these artists I have had none, and for this reason it has been possible, perhaps, to take a less partial view than those writers nearly all Frenchmen - who have written articles, pamphlets, or monographs on the artists, which have been chiefly eulogies, and at the best have either been brief or unsatisfactory. To those who have not yet felt the influence of the painters of the Barbizon School, the claim of impartiality may appear, in certain instances, somewhat questionable, but I have carefully avoided ex treme commendation, and the praise accorded is believed in every case to be fully deserved. Camille Corot: 130 Paintings
Author: Jessica Findley
Publisher: Osmora Incorporated
ISBN: 2765906734
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 136
Book Description
Camille Corot was a French landscape painter and the leading artist of the Barbizon school. Corot is a key figure in landscape painting and his vast output simultaneously references the Neo-Classical tradition and anticipates the plein-air innovations of Impressionism. Corot often credited as a precursor of Impressionist practice, but he approached his landscapes more traditionally than is usually believed. Compared to the Impressionists who came later, Corot's palette is restrained, dominated with browns and blacks along with dark and silvery green. Though appearing at times to be rapid and spontaneous, usually his strokes were controlled and careful, and his compositions well-thought out and generally rendered as simply and concisely as possible, heightening the poetic effect of the imagery. His contributions to figure painting are hardly less important; Degas preferred his figures to his landscapes, and the classical figures of Picasso pay overt homage to Corot's influence.

The Barbizon School & the Origins of Impressionism

Book Description
The key painters associated with the Barbizon School - Corot, Millet, Rousseau and Courbet - are among the finest landscape artists of the nineteenth century. From their base at the village of Barbizon in the Forest of Fontainebleau, just outside Paris, they painted nature as they saw it, anticipating many of the techniques and effects of Impressionism. In this survey Steven Adams re-evaluates French landscape painting in the half-century before Impressionism, placing this 'return to nature' against the background of the rapid industrialization and political crises of the period.
