Book Description
During recent years, the Bakelite jewelry of the 1930s has become a trendy and popular fashion accessory and much-valued collectible. Emblematic of a unique culture that only could have blossomed between a depression and a world war, this cheeky costume jewelry is beautifully shown here in its amazing range, humor, high style, good-hearted silliness, streamlined chic, and daring inventiveness. Bakelite, the first thermosetting plastic, formed the basis for a Depression-era fashion trend that began, spread like wildfire, and died away, all within a few short years--between 1933 and 1941. Two generations later, there is an astounding resurgence of interest in Bakelite jewelry. Among fashion trendsetters, there is growing infatuation with these playful and very wearable baubles. Among serious collectors, there is fierce competition for the rare, quality pieces that were made in limited numbers under such evocative brand names as Marblette, Gemstone, Prystal, Agtine, and Catalin. Bakelite seems to be everywhere, and prices are rising. The authors have assembled for this book--from many sources--the greatest array ever seen of Bakelite jewelry. They have also appended a very useful guide to prices. ILLUSTRATIONS 150 full colour

Book Description
"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Whether used as a reference or a beautiful keepsake, it's a very worthy addition to the world of Mah Jongg." --Ruth Unger, President, National Mah Jongg League This is the first book to fully capture the story of the exotic and exciting game of Mahjong or "Mah Jongg", offering an intimate look at the history of the game as well as the visual beauty of the tiles. When authors Ann Israel and Gregg Swain began playing Mahjong, they were unaware of the vintage collections that existed not only in the United States but also across the globe. Slowly, they started to collect their own sets of Mahjong and as their collections grew, so did their appreciation of the history of, and interest in, the game. Finding few references, Israel and Swain set out to create a book that chronicles the early beginnings of the game and documents Mahjong sets from the most basic, made simply of paper, to the most precious materials such as ivory and mother-of-pearl. Recognized and respected scholars and game experts have collaborated with Israel and Swain, contributing important chapters on the game's history and its pieces as well as technical information on the tiles. Lastly, great collectors from around the globe have shared their incredible sets and memories for the first time in one book for everyone to enjoy. With hundreds of beautiful new images by renowned photographer Michel Arnaud, and including historical documentation and ephemera, Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game fills the void between the past's and today's game, providing vision, inspiration and resources. Anyone who has ever been intrigued by a Mahjong tile will find in these pages visually stunning photographs that will entice them into becoming an enthusiast of the timeless game of Mahjong.

Book Description
"I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. . . . Plastics." This line from the film The Graduate has come to symbolize the hubris, promise, and disappointment embodied in one of the world's most ubiquitous materials. At present, plastics are cheap, widely used, and durable. But that durability means that plastics persist in the environment for decades. Images of swaths of the ocean or beaches awash in plastic trash are regularly in the news. To address the ever-growing mass of plastic waste, entire countries are banning single-use plastic items, and solutions for recycling plastic effectively and for creating eco-friendly plastics are active fields of research. A little over a century ago, however, Leo Baekeland's invention of the first synthetic plastic-Bakelite-earned him the then-laudatory moniker "Father of Plastics" in the press. Bakelite proved to be an extremely useful product, with applications ranging from radio cabinets and electrical insulators to colorful Art Deco jewelry. Yet there is much more to Leo Baekeland's story than Bakelite. In his exploration of Baekeland's long career, Joris Mercelis traces Baekeland's life from his youth in Belgium through his education and immigration to the United States, and highlights Baekeland's other best-known invention, Velox photographic paper. Throughout, Baekeland maintained his American and European professional connections and continued to cross boundaries between the academy, business, and industrial research. While the book does not offer a full biography of Baekeland, Mercelis does use Baekeland's career as tool for examining the changing relations between (academic) science and industry, with special attention to intellectual property strategies and scientific entrepreneurship. Mercelis argues that a transatlantic perspective is necessary to appreciate the role of scientific entrepreneurship and intellectual property in the development of the science-industry nexus, and ultimately asks the question when and where to draw the line between the academic research and industrial pursuits"--
