Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 15: An International Review of Spectroscopy and Atronomical Physic The dimensions of the spectrograph of course depended upon the size of the optical parts, in particular of the prisms. After careful consideration, and in accordance with the advice of others having experience with large prisms, we decided that the diameter of the beam to be transmitted by the prisms should not exceed two and one-half inches, and then we further limited it to two inches (51 mm). Inasmuch as the correcting lens which Professor Hastings was designing for the forty-inch telescope was not to change the angular aperture of the great objective of 11 - 5, this at once fixed the focal length of the colli nator at thirty-eight inches. We desired to obtain all the advantage possible from a long-focus collimator, in permitting the use of a wider slit and consequent shorter exposure, without loss of purity as compared with a shorter collimator. The con ditions of rigidity and compactness seemed best satisfied by a total deviation of 180° for the ray passing through the prisms at minimum. This is the fifth of six volumes collecting significant papers of the distinguished astrophysicist and Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar. His work is notable for its breadth as well as for its brilliance; his practice has been to change his focus from time to time to pursue new areas of research. The result has been a prolific career full of discoveries and insights, some of which are only now being fully appreciated. Chandrasekhar has selected papers that trace the development of his ideas and that present aspects of his work not fully covered in the books he has periodically published to summarize his research in each area. Volume 5 covers all of Chandrasekhar's contributions to the general theory of relativity and relativity's astrophysical applications (except his research on black holes and colliding gravitational waves, which is covered in Volume 6). The major topics include the influence of general relativity on the pulsations and stability of stars; the back reaction of gravitational waves on their sources; and post-Newtonian approximations to general relativity and their astrophysical applications. In addition to research papers, the volume includes two 1972 lectures in which Chandrasekhar assessed the past, present, and future of relativistic astrophysics. The foreword by astrophysicist Kip S. Thorne is an absorbing, brief history of the field since 1961, capturing the atmosphere of the early research and clarifying Chandrasekhar's dominant role in it. Chandrasekhar has never written a monograph synthesizing his research in relativistic astrophysics, and therefore this volume of his papers serves as a summary of that work for students and more senior researchers.

The dynamics of quantum systems exposed to ultrafast (at the femtosecond time-scale) and strong laser radiation has a highly non-linear character, leading to a number of new phenomena, outside the reach of traditional spectroscopy. The current laser technology makes feasible the probing and control of quantum-scale systems with fields that are as strong as the interatomic Coulombic interactions and time resolution that is equal to (or less than) typical atomic evolution times. It is indispensable that any theoretical description of the induced physical processes should rely on the accurate calculation of the atomic structure and a realistic model of the laser radiation as pulsed fields. This book aims to provide an elementary introduction of theoretical and computational methods and by no means is anywhere near to complete. The selection of the topics as well as the particular viewpoint is best suited for early-stage students and researchers; the included material belongs in the mainstream of theoretical approaches albeit using simpler language without sacrificing mathematical accuracy.
