Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, 1895, Vol. 34 In 189 5 Percival lewisi at Johns Hopkins measured the wave lengths of thirteen infra-red spectral lines Whose wave-lengths lay between Ca 7664 and Th a.u., with an actual accuracy of about one a.u.; an accuracy hitherto unattained and not equaled in the subsequent important researches of Lehmann,2 Bergmann,3 and Moll.4 In two very noteworthy contributions in 1908 and 1909 Paschen5 very materially extended the work of Lewis, attaining an accuracy in case Of sources of constant intensity of a few tenths au. And a maximum wave-length of approximately au. This latter limit was again extended the following year to au. By the same observer. Many of the lines found will serve as standards of wave-length in the infra - red, on account of their intensity and Sharpness and the accuracy with which they were measured; while the results in general have fur nished much needed data for the establishment of series laws and especially the combination principle of Ritz. Richardson's calculations, based upon assump tions regarding the atomic structure and atomic distances which seem to him reasonable, give magnitudes for the pressure-shift from 5 to 200 times as great as the observed values, and require that the displacement shall increase as the third power of the wave length instead of approximately as the first power, as shown by experiment. Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 37: An International Review of Spectroscopy and Astronomical Physics; January-June, 1913 The unique behavior of the sharp calcium line K as shown in radial velocity investigations of a certain class of stars was first noted by Hartmann in a discussion of the spectrum and the orbit of δ Orionis. The large range, something over 200 km, indicated by the broad lines of this star made the comparatively constant velocity of the K line of calcium stand out prominently. Hartmann's conclusion that his range of values for K, 21 km, was due to general errors of observation has been questioned by Frost and Adams. His hypothesis that the calcium line K as photographed in the spectrum of δ Orionis is due to a calcium cloud lying in the line of sight at some point between the solar system and this star has not been disproved and constitutes a part of the history of stellar spectroscopy. Since that time considerable attention has been given to stars of the early spectral types which have sharp H and K lines, and a list of objects known to belong to this class would at the present time include a hundred or more stars.
