Book Description
The very first thing one does in all situations of life is orient oneself. Decisions of orientation, which are mostly made under uncertainty and the pressure of time, largely determine subsequent decisions. But what is orientation? The problems of orientation are as old as humankind, the word is used everywhere, but the concept has never been thoroughly investigated. The philosopher Werner Stegmaier comprehensively clarifies for the first time the conditions and structures of orientation, including those of our sexual, economic, media, political, legal, scientific, artistic, religious, moral, and ethical orientations. He thereby establishes a new philosophical language and offers a philosophy for our time. "As if I unexpectedly slipped down into a deep vortex, I am swirled around in a way that I can neither put a foot down, nor swim to the surface. Nonetheless, I will work my way out ... " (René Descartes, Philosopher) "As often as my speculation seems to lead me too far from the paved road of common sense, I stand still and seek to orient myself. I look back at the point from which we started, and I seek to compare the two guideposts I have." (Moses Mendelssohn, Philosopher) "A philosophical problem has the form: ‘I do not know my way about.’" (Ludwig Wittgenstein, Philosopher) "The second O, orientation – as the repository of our genetic heritage, cultural tradition, and previous experiences – is the most important part of the O-O-D-A loop since it shapes the way we observe, the way we decide, the way we act." (John Boyd, Military Strategist)

Book Description
This in-depth analysis sheds light on the aberrations and well-kept secrets of the small world of vocational and career guidance professionals. Chances are they won't like it, and it'll be reflected in the comments! Do you want to know what's what with all those career methods and which one to choose ? Concerned about the emotional and financial cost of a poor choice or a university drop out? Philippe Vivier, career coach for over 19 years, uses examples to describe and dissect the most common misconceptions and obnoxious tricks of the guidance sector, as well as the problems associated with the skills of the interveners. In this pamphlet, he explores and compares, in a simple and sensible way, the limits and results you can expect from the different methods, from career guidance, to vocational tests and career assessments to guidance counseling and coaching. It examines and shows which methods really help you "choose" a profession and career, and which you should absolutely avoid. It's a serious subject, but you can expect to laugh once or twice, at least that's what he hopes. To be the big winner of this game in which you bet your professional life, read this pamphlet! Is this book totally exhaustive in the absolute sense of the word? No, it's about getting to the heart of the matter and answering the most pressing questions of parents and students by taking into account the most representative existing methods. There was no question of going through all the new methods with nebulous foundations of every individual who thinks they have an original idea or simply in search of a secondary source of income. Is this analysis meant to be scientific? No, it's not, and it's important that it's a pleasant read for everyone, but it's based on real, observable facts and elements, and presented as we go along. You'll be the judge of the relevance of the comments and arguments. If only it were possible to set up serious orientation experiments conducted by psychology researchers, with controllable variables and 20-year follow-up, on a sufficiently representative sample of students. One assumes then that the institution, thanks to the work of experts from state research centers, would have published a guide for the public based on these long ago, indicating the rules to be respected in guidance matters, to offset possible abuses by unscrupulous individuals or private organizations. So what can you expect from this book? A detailed analysis of guidance methods, their limitations and their benefits, so that you stop being fooled, focusing on the essentials and answering just one question: what is the best guidance method? Because our time is precious.

Book Description
The book is the first systematic research completely devoted to a comprehensive study of virtual knots and classical knots as its integral part. The book is self-contained and contains up-to-date exposition of the key aspects of virtual (and classical) knot theory.Virtual knots were discovered by Louis Kauffman in 1996. When virtual knot theory arose, it became clear that classical knot theory was a small integral part of a larger theory, and studying properties of virtual knots helped one understand better some aspects of classical knot theory and encouraged the study of further problems. Virtual knot theory finds its applications in classical knot theory. Virtual knot theory occupies an intermediate position between the theory of knots in arbitrary three-manifold and classical knot theory. In this book we present the latest achievements in virtual knot theory including Khovanov homology theory and parity theory due to V O Manturov and graph-link theory due to both authors. By means of parity, one can construct functorial mappings from knots to knots, filtrations on the space of knots, refine many invariants and prove minimality of many series of knot diagrams.Graph-links can be treated as “diagramless knot theory”: such “links” have crossings, but they do not have arcs connecting these crossings. It turns out, however, that to graph-links one can extend many methods of classical and virtual knot theories, in particular, the Khovanov homology and the parity theory.
