Book Description
The Pandemic has so many people inside their homes, cooking more than ever. Most are looking for quick, easy and delicious recipes. My unique book combines, art, anecdotes, an Introduction to art and cooking, recipes, and brief narratives by amateur cooks and bakers. Ten of my neighbors volunteered to participate, as a way to stay connected through COVID19. Each page portrays the cooks with their portraits in sepia-toned photographs. Stories describe their country of origin, the person who taught them how to make the dish and the best stores to find the ingredients. My neighbors come from Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Romania, and Russia, This book represents a rich portrait of a Queens global community. All recipes are accompanied by my original watercolors. "The Art in Queens Cuisine: A Global Vegetarian Cookbook", is not meant to convince anyone to become vegetarian, rather, it acquaints readers with how to use vegetables as a main ingredient, with descriptions of healthy vegetarian options. Readers will enjoy learning how to impart flavors that can be cooked with one another easily. The focus is seeing connections between cooking and art. One of the watercolors features an eggplant. It is a brilliant depiction of the regal eggplant that goes along with a Bulgarian eggplant recipe and narrative. Readers will appreciate connections between the cooks' stories, and the painters' visual interpretations of each recipe. My book acknowledges this most difficult time that we are living through. Art and cooking may not change violence or pandemics, in our world, but it can change hearts of those whose spirits are deeply saddened by tasting our delicious dishes, and become inspired by art.

Book Description
“An emotional trip down memory lane for those of us who count our favorite restaurants as cherished personalities and members of our family.” —Danny Meyer, founder of Shake Shack From romantic spots like Le Bernardin to beloved holes-in-the-wall like Corner Bistro, John Donohue renders people’s favorite restaurants in a manner that captures the emotional pull a certain place can have on the hearts of New Yorkers. All the Restaurants in New York is a collection of these drawings, characterized by their appealingly loose and gently distorted lines. These transportive images are intentionally spare, leaving the viewer room to layer on their own meaning and draw connections to their own memories of a place, of a time, of an atmosphere. Featuring an eclectic mix of 100 restaurants—from Minetta Tavern to Frankies 457 and River Café—this charming collection of drawings is accompanied by interviews with the owners, chefs, and loyal patrons of these much-loved restaurants. “I love John’s spare, romantic, quirky portrayals of iconic New York restaurants so much that I purchased over a dozen of his prints to hang around my office. These places come to define our lives in New York—that job right next to Balthazar, that boyfriend who lived above Prune, that interview that took place at ‘21’ . . . They deserve this spotlight, this tribute.” —Amanda Kludt, Editor in Chief, Eater “John Donohue is the Rembrandt of New York City’s restaurant facades. His collection is an invaluable, evocative guide to the ever-changing, slowly vanishing landscape of the city’s great dining scene. It belongs on the bookshelf of every devout chowhound and fresser.” —Adam Platt, Restaurant Critic, New York magazine

Book Description
Prized recipes and tales of home, work, and family—from the immigrant vendor-chefs of NYC’s first and favorite night market On summer Saturday nights in Queens, New York, mouthwatering scents from Moldova to Mexico fill the air. Children play, adults mingle . . . and, above all, everyone eats. Welcome to the Queens Night Market, where thousands of visitors have come to feast on amazing international food—from Filipino dinuguan to Haitian diri ak djon djon. The World Eats Here brings these incredible recipes from over 40 countries to your home kitchen—straight from the first- and second-generation immigrant cooks who know them best. With every recipe comes a small piece of the American story: of culture shock and language barriers, of falling in love and following passions, and of family bonds tested then strengthened by cooking. You’ll meet Sangyal Phuntsok, who learned to make dumplings in a refugee school for Tibetan children; now, his Tibetan Beef Momos with Hot Sauce sell like hotcakes in New York City. And Liia Minnebaeva will blow you away with her Bashkir Farm Cheese Donuts—a treat from her childhood in Oktyabrsky in western Russia. Though each story is unique, they all celebrate one thing: Food brings people together, and there’s no better proof of that than the Queens Night Market, where flavors from all over the world can be enjoyed in one unforgettable place.

Book Description
More than 100 heirloom recipes from a dynamic chef and farmer working the lands of his great-great-great grandfather. From Hot Buttermilk Biscuits and Sweet Potato Pie to Salmon Cakes on Pepper Rice and Gullah Fish Stew, Gullah Geechee food is an essential cuisine of American history. It is the culinary representation of the ocean, rivers, and rich fertile loam in and around the coastal South. From the Carolinas to Georgia and Florida, this is where descendants of enslaved Africans came together to make extraordinary food, speaking the African Creole language called Gullah Geechee. In this groundbreaking and beautiful cookbook, Matthew Raiford pays homage to this cuisine that nurtured his family for seven generations. In 2010, Raiford’s Nana handed over the deed to the family farm to him and his sister, and Raiford rose to the occasion, nurturing the farm that his great-great-great grandfather, a freed slave, purchased in 1874. In this collection of heritage and updated recipes, he traces a history of community and family brought together by food.
