Propeller-hull interaction arises in two related but distinct ways. Unsteady forces and moments developed by the propeller operating in the spatially nonuniform hull wake and transmitted to the hull through the propeller shafting are known as bearing forces. Periodic pressure forces induced on the hull due to the hydrodynamic action of unsteady propeller velocity and pressure field are termed surface forces. The increase of shaft output power and restrictive profile of current single-screw designs give rise to vibration and noise problems. In the past, propeller-induced ship hull vibration has been handled primarily as in-service engineering modifications. Recently, however, many articles have appeared on the topic of ship vibration and noise arising from pressure excitation (1), (2). A fund of theoretical knowledge on the various hydrodynamic aspects of the interaction problem has emerged from the collective works of groups of investigators such as Breslin et al. (3), Cox et al. (4), Kaplan (5), Noordzij (6), Huse (7) and others. In spite of these advances in the understanding of the flow, there is no satisfactory answer to the question of whether some particular wake, together with a given propeller configuration, will cause vibration problems at a given speed.

The quantitative role of wavemaking at the free surface in the phenomenon of hull propeller interaction is investigated by means of a general scheme devised to determine the potential, viscous and wave components of wake and thrust deduction. It requires the concerted application of various analytical tools such as the lifting line theory of propellers, the method of singularities for representing the hull and propeller by source distributions and the linearized free-surface theory of wavemaking, as well as model experiment techniques such as the conventional Froude analysis of propulsion factors, nominal wake measurements and wave profile measurements. The procedure is applied to the specific case of a thin mathematical hull form driven by a four-bladed propeller of simple geometry.

Measurements of the boundary-layer characteristics and pressure distribution on three axisymmetric bodies with and without a propeller in operation are correlated with analytical techniques for computing (1) the interaction between the hull boundary layer flow and the potential flow and (2) the interaction between the operating propeller and the thick stern boundary layer. The agreement between the measured and computed shear stresses, pressure distributions, and velocity profiles was satisfactory except over the last 5 percent of body length on the two fullest afterbodies. An inviscid propeller-stern-boundary-layer interaaction model was developed and found to give accurate predictions of effective velocity profiles. The experimental results show that the potential-flow propeller-hull interaction methods give accurate predictions for thrust deduction and the propeller-induced pressure distribution. The present analytical techniques will be useful for predicting the full-scale effective velocity profile for propeller design when account is taken of the effects of Reynolds number, roughness, and propeller suction in modifying the nominal velocity profiles.
