Book Description
The A to Z of Slovakia offers an up to date series of cross-referenced dictionary entries on Slovak political, social, and economic development since the creation of the second Slovak Republic in 1993 until its admission into the European Union in 2004. It includes all of the political actors: the presidents, prime ministers, and party leaders, and many leading academics and cultural personalities, including those from the national minorities. It also contains entries on the various institutions of the Slovak Republic like the judiciary, the armed forces, the media, and parliamentary committees as well as entries that explain Slovakia's position and role in international organizations like NATO and the European Union. The historical survey explains how Slovakia, in its post-Communist transformation, was almost excluded, but in the end became a full member of these two institutions.

Slovakia in History
Author: Mikuláš Teich
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139494945
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 435
Book Description
Until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia's identity seemed inextricably linked with that of the former state. This book explores the key moments and themes in the history of Slovakia from the Duchy of Nitra's ninth-century origins to the establishment of independent Slovakia at midnight 1992–3. Leading scholars chart the gradual ethnic awakening of the Slovaks during the Reformation and Counter-Reformation and examine how Slovak national identity took shape with the codification of standard literary Slovak in 1843 and the subsequent development of the Slovak national movement. They show how, after a thousand years of Magyar-Slovak coexistence, Slovakia became part of the new Czechoslovak state from 1918–39, and shed new light on its role as a Nazi client state as well as on the postwar developments leading up to full statehood in the aftermath of the collapse of communism in 1989. There is no comparable book in English on the subject.

Svinia in Black and White
Author: David Z. Scheffel
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442606835
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
Roma—or Gypsies as some people still call them—constitute Europe's largest, poorest, and most enigmatic minority. In spite of their centuries-long coexistence with mainstream Europeans, our picture of this people remains rooted in stereotypes and myths that have little in common with contemporary social reality. Full-fledged citizens of the European Union, and ostensibly protected by the world's most progressive human rights legislation, many Roma live under conditions that challenge our notions of Europe, modernity, and pluralism. This book is about a Romani settlement in eastern Slovakia. It is a community that has grown to become one of the largest and most problematic townships of rural Roma in the entire district. The dark-skinned squatters on the margins of Svinia are segregated from the surrounding society by means of physical and social barriers entrenched in local ideology and enforced by rules and conventions reminiscent of apartheid. David Scheffel offers a detailed ethnographic account of the social, cultural, and historical circumstances that have encouraged and supported inter-ethnic inequality in the region. In the process, he demonstrates the complexity of what is often referred to as Europe's "Gypsy problem" with passion and sensitivity.

The A to Z of the Holocaust
Author: Jack Fischel
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
With the aging of the survivors of the Holocaust, it is becoming increasingly vital that references dealing with this massively important event be made available. The attempted extermination of the Jewish Race--as well as the murders of millions of other victims the Nazis deemed "inferior"--must not be forgotten. The intention of this A to Z of the Holocaust is to focus on the unprecedented nature of the German assault on the Jews. Its purpose, therefore, is to provide the reader with the facts of the Holocaust with an emphasis on the central role Jews played in the Nazi genocide. The introductory essay provides the reader with an historical overview of the Holocaust, and is followed by individual entries on the subject. An extensive bibliography and chronology further supplement the usefulness of this volume. This book is intended to be an easy-to-use reference tool for both the history scholar and student.

Slovakian and Bulgarian Aces of World War 2
Author: Jiri Rajlich
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1782008527
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 149
Book Description
The story of the Slovak and Bulgarian aces and how they fought alongside Germany in Messerschmitts. In 1939, Slovakia signed a protection agreement with the German Reich and joined the attack on Poland, where its Avia B-534-equipped fighter squadrons claimed their first kills. In October 1942, having made do with obsolete aircraft, the Slovaks were equipped with Bf 109Es and eventually acquired 43 Messerschmitt fighters. The Slovaks would claim over 215 kills. Although it supported German efforts in Yugoslavia and Greece, Bulgaria did not declare war on Russia. First seeing action in August 1943, Bulgarian fighter pilots used their Bf 109Gs to good effect. As this book outlines, from late 1943 through to mid-1944, the Bulgarian pilots attempted to defend the country from American bombers, and Stoyanov and Bochev made ace during this period.
