Book Description
Excerpt from The A B C of Aviation As a result of considerable experience obtained last year in instructing prospective aviators and mechanics, and in response to an, insistent demand, the writer prepared a treatise on air plane power-plants called Aviation Engines, which has met with a very gratifying reception and which is used by many aviation schools as a text on this subject. Instructors who are using the engine book successfully and numerous students who have derived some benefit from its contents have asked for an exposition of the airplane in which its operation and te pair principles would be written in the same simple non-tech nical manner as the treatise referring to power-plants. Book Description
Excerpt from Aviation: An Introduction to the Elements of Flight There is an ever-increasing number of people who desire to appreciate the main issues of technical subjects unconnected with their own professions: to such, primarily, I address this Introduction to the study of flight. There is no evading the fundamental technology of any real subject, whether commercial, scientific, or political by nature; the reader must ever provide the interest if he would receive any return whatsoever for his purchase of the author's capital. In this case, as the capital is so small, the initial interest on the reader's part must be all the greater. The scope of the book is indicated by the arrangement and character of the chapters. I have divided the treatment of the subject into four main parts. The first part relates to the fundamental principles of flight; the second part is concerned with practical accomplishment; it refers in detail to the work of certain notable pioneers like Lilienthal and the Wrights, and also has chapters on modem development, as demonstrated, for example, at the military aeroplane trials of 1912. The third part is mainly historical, and is placed in this order so that the significance of the "milestones" may more readily be appreciated. The fourth part is a collection of appendices that have no exact sequence or proper place in the body of the book. Among these I have included several simple numerical examples that may be of some assistance to the student. In any case, there is nothing like a few specific questions and answers as an assistance to fixing ideas on a strange subject. Book Description
Excerpt from Aviation Several courses are open to one who writes a book about flying. One can make it technical, for instance, and so appeal merely to the experts. In this way, one caters for a very limited audience. Or one can make it semi-technical, and endeavour to appeal to experts and to the ordinary individual as well. This I do not regard as a very happy compromise. Or the book may be made frankly non-technical, and so bid for the interest of all those readers who desire a knowledge of flying, but who do not wish any large amount of technical information. From this third point of view I have written my book; and I hope that just the ordinary individual, who does not want to be bothered by stacks of facts and rows of figures, will find something in its pages that will really interest him. If he does, I shall feel that my work has been amply repaid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Sky High: The Story of Aviation Our indebtednesses are few but deep. To Mr. Edward Weeks of the Atlantic Monthly Press and Mr. Theodore Morrison of the Atlantic Monthly we owe the original idea from which this book stemmed. Professor William N. Seaver, Librarian, and Mrs. Katherine Maynard, Vail Librarian, of Massachu setts Institute of Technology, graciously threw open the Treasure Room of the Library, which yielded information on the obscure early days of aviation and aerostation. We cannot be sufficiently grateful to Mr. Edward P. Warner, the first holder of the portfolio of Assistant Secretary Of the Navy for Aeronautics, and now Editor of Aviation, who read the proofs with painstaking care. TO Mr. Carl H. Claudy of Washington, D. C., we owe a debt as great for the thorough ness with which be examined the proof for every type of error which an author can make. And without the supersecretarial services of Mrs. Harriet Rodgers this book could not have been written at all. Book Description
Excerpt from Aviation and Its Future: Instruction Paper Aloft, it is surrounded by perils, both from within and without. The close proximity of such a huge quantity of highly inflammable gas to the gasoline engines or other sources of fire renders its Opera tion risky, to say the least, while it is equally exposed to fire or explo sion through being out in an electrical storm, it being the general consensus of opinion that lightning, or an electrical discharge caused by the high difference of potential between the atmosphere and the gas bag and metal parts of the airship, caused the explosion which ended the lives of Oscar Erbsloh and his five companions in one of the German military airships in the summer of 1910. As explained under Wireless on Aeroplane and Airship, it is not necessary that the airship itself should be actually struck by lightning to bring about this discharge, although it offers a powerful attraction; its mere presence at a height where the atmosphere is heavily charged, being sufficient to create electrical discharges capable of setting fire to the gas or to the envelope. Book Description
Excerpt from Aviation: Its Principles, Its Present and Future IN the following pages the author has endeavoured to accurate description of the construction and of balloons and aeroplanes in simple language. He hopes that the matter which he has produced will be of interest and of service to the many men and women who are so intensely interested in Aviation matters. Whenever an aeroplane appears in the neighbourhood of any town, practically the whole town comes out to meet it, and is eager in its questions of the aviator and his mechanics. The author hopes that the matter contained in this book will enable those who see an aeroplane, or a balloon, for the first time to understand its working, to recognise its different parts and their uses, and to follow the different manoeuvres in the air, on alighting, and on the ground. He also hopes that it will answer as a primer for the student of Aviation. The author has purposely avoided mathematics and explanations other than such as can be embodied in simple language. He hopes, however, that the student will find this book a good introduction to heavier books on the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Aviation: Including Construction and Operation Seeking to play the game according to the rules, I am forced to two conclusions: First, that I have little to say on the grouping of subjects and, secondly, that the typographical arrangement requires some explanation -perhaps even justification. I will dismiss the first by noting merely that the analysis, in skeleton form, which precedes each chapter is intended as a guide, aiding dissection of the subject into easily remembered parts. These pages are in many ways comparable to the instructor's preliminary talk or a blackboard outline before the class takes up co-related subjects in detail.
