Book Description
"Thanatopsis" is a renowned poem written by William Cullen Bryant, an American poet and editor of the 19th century. First published in 1817 when Bryant was just 17 years old, the poem is considered one of the early masterpieces of American literature. In "Thanatopsis," Bryant explores themes related to death and nature, contemplating the idea of mortality and the interconnectedness of life and death. The title, derived from the Greek words "thanatos" (death) and "opsis" (view), suggests a meditation on the contemplation of death. The poem begins with an invocation to nature, portraying it as a grand and eternal force. Bryant expresses the idea that death is a natural part of the cycle of life, and all living things ultimately return to the earth. He emphasizes the consoling and unifying aspects of death, encouraging readers to view it as a peaceful and harmonious process. "Thanatopsis" reflects the Romantic literary movement's appreciation for nature and its role in shaping human perspectives. Bryant's eloquent language and profound reflections on mortality contribute to the enduring appeal of the poem.

Book Description
Excerpt from Thanatopsis, Sella, and Other Poems Birth and Parents. - William Cullen Bryant was born at Cummington, western Massachusetts, on November 3, 1794. His ancestors were Puritans, both of his parents being descendants of Mayflower passengers, his father of Stephen Bryant and his mother of John Alden, of whom Longfellow was also a descendant. His father, Dr. Peter Bryant, was a village physician, highly respected by all who knew him for his integrity and intellectual keenness. He was a well-read man, versed in ancient and modern languages, and passionately fond of music and poetry. He also took an active interest in politics, representing Cummington in the state legislature for several years. His mother was a woman of practical sense and great force of character. She was a recognized leader in the community, always ready to help the unfortunate or to assist in the advancement of neighborhood interests. To them Bryant owed no small part of his success. Not only was he inspired by them with the deep love for justice and good reflected in both his writings and his life, but he was also encouraged in his literary efforts from childhood. No one else has brought out this fact so well as the poet himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Thanatopsis and Other Poems: And Other Poems Bryant began to make verses in his eighth year, one of his earliest efforts being a paraphrase of the first chapter of the Book of Job, and another, a poetical address before his school. In his thirteenth year he surprised his family and the public with a political satire of over five hundred lines, which was published at Boston under the title, The Embargo, or Sketches of the Times; a Satire, by a Youth of Thirteen. It appeared in a second edition the following year, together with several other poems of a political character. More than forty pieces of verse were written before he was sixteen years old - odes, elegies, satires, songs, and translations: but they are little more than mocking-bird rhymes, in manner echoing Pope, whose influence was still dominant, and in matter rehearsing the political sentiments of the times; more over, they contain not the slightest hint-of the characteristics of his later poetry.
