Book Description
Excerpt from The Flotation Process To assist in the development of such an important step in metallurgy is worth any effort that may be made, and it seems that accumulation of the results of practical and theoretical investigations that have been carried out by many men at many places is an important aid to further development. My part in the furtherance of flotation is this compilation, which presents the information about the process that I have been able to ao quire by practice 'and consultation. To simplify as much as possible has been a primary object and I have endeavored to eliminate most of the speculation that has encumbered the litera ture of the process up to this time, retaining only those parts that have been definitely proved correct, or can show a reasonable basis for their inclusion. No one can claim, at this time, to know enough about flotation to pose as a master of the art. Any attempt to be complete must include the work of many individuals and the ideas of many more. I make no claim of originality for the facts put forth in this book. They have been gathered where they could be found and have been used as has seemed most appropriate. The origi nal volume of Theodore J. Hoover has been referred to often. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Flotation Thus the third and most successful phase of flotation has grown out of the sec'ond, although it is more nearly the logical development of the first phase. F ilm-suspension involves the aid of air, for the floating Of pulverized minerals on the surface of water is helped by the air entrained in the ore. The attempt to invent an effective method out Of Oil-buoyancy instead of film suspension goes far to explain the delay that marked the develop ment Of this metallurgic process. Book Description
Excerpt from Flotation Tests of Idaho Ores In view of the fact that it has been difficult to obtain representative samples of flotation feed from the mills, owing to the necessity of shipping the material wet and free from oil or other foreign matter that might be deleterious to the differential separation of the sul phides, the writers have felt justified in running flotation tests with the mill feeds in order to ascertain whether a differential separation of the sulphides could be effected. However, two different lots of flotation feed were tested for differential flotation, and the results of tests of one of these are given in this report. It is hoped that it will be possible later to test out the flotation feed for differential flota tion oni'a large scale in some of the mills. This paper covers part of the investigations carried on by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Idaho Bureau of Mines, the University of Idaho, and certain mining companies of the Coeur d'alene region. Although the results of the tests included in this report are not to be considered final, they indicate possibili ties and may suggest others leading to a solution of the problem of separating lead and zinc sulphides by differential flotation in the treatment of certain ores. Book Description
Excerpt from Concentration by Flotation He had the germ of an idea pregnant with metallurgic possibility, but it was still-born. Haynes and Bradford had inklings of the phys! Ical phenomena underlying the flotation process, but they were pio neers that blazed no trail and crossed no range of fruitful discovery. Carrie J. Everson comes next in point of time. Her groping after a practical process is noteworthy by reason of the introduction of acid, but her trail also stopped at the foot of the talus on the slope of the range. The patent records disclose other abortive attempts in the same direction during the ensuing decade, but none is of any con sequence except H. L. Sulman's British patent of 1893, in which he describes a means for saving 'float' gold by adding something to the mill-water that will diminish its surface-tension. This is interesting as recording scientific curiosity concerning the physics of flotation on the part of a metallurgist that was destined to contribute so greatly to the decisive development of the process. His successful participation is due, in part, to his having been formerly engaged professionally in the chemistry of the oil and soap industries, for thereby he acquired knowledge of a kind that proved of great value to him at a later date. So far no workable method had been invented - only ingenious schemes and impracticable proposals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
