An investigation of the longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a 1/4-scale model of the VZ-2 tilt-wing vertical-take-off- and-landing aircraft during rapid transitions has been made on the Langley control-line facility. Only the longitudinal characteristics were studied because with the control-line technique the other phases of the model motion are partially restrained. The rapid transitions from hovering to forward flight could be performed easily at any of the accelerations attempted; whereas, the transitions from forward flight to hovering were generally accompanied by a strong nose up pitching moment which at times was uncontrollable because of an inadequate amount of available pitch control. The model was more difficult to control during rapid decelerations than during slow decelerations and was also more difficult to control for rearward center-of-gravity conditions than for forward ones.

Abstract: Aerodynamic heat-transfer measurements were at six stations on the 40-inch-long 10° total-angle conical nose of a rocket-propelled model which was flight tested at Mach numbers up to 5.9. The range of local Reynolds number was from 6.6 x 106 to 55.2 x 106. Laminar, transitional, and turbulent heat-transfer coefficients were measured, and, in general, the laminar and turbulent measurements were in good agreement with theory for cones. Experimental transition Reynolds numbers varied from less than 8.5 x 106 to 19.4 x 106. At a relatively constant ratio of wall temperature to local static temperature near 1.2, the transition Reynolds number increased from 9.2 x 106 to 19.4 x 106 as Mach number increased from 1.57 to 3.38. At Mach numbers near 3.7, the transition Reynolds number decreased as the skin temperature increased toward adiabatic wall temperatures.

Democratic transitions have occurred in many countries in various regions across the globe, such as Southern Europe, Latin America, Africa, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and these nations have undergone simuntaneously political, economic and social transformations. Yet, the patterns and characteristics of transitions have varied significantly, and different modes of transition have resulted in different outcomes. This book offers cross-national comparisons of democratic transition since the turn of the twentieth century and asks what makes democracies succeed or fail. In doing so it explores the influence the mode of transition has on the longevity or durability of the democracy, by theoretically examining and quantitatively testing this relationship. The authors argue that the mode of transition directly impacts the success and failure of democracy, and suggest that cooperative transitions, where opposition groups work together with incumbent elites to peacefully transition the state, result in democracies that last longer and are associated with higher measures of democratic quality. Based on a cross-national dataset of all democratic transitioning states since 1900, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of international politics, comparative politics and democracy, and democratization studies.
