Book Description
As the demand for English language education grows in Asia, there has been a parallel growth in the development and implementation of standardized tests at the local level. Offering much-needed context on locally produced tests in Asia, contributors examine emerging models for English language assessment and the impact these large-scale tests have on the teaching and learning of English. Chapters address the following well-known and developing high-stakes tests in different regions across Asia: the GEPT, the TEPS, the VSTEP, the CET, the EIKEN and TEAP, and the ELPA. Brought together by world-renowned testing assessment scholar Cyril Weir and the Language Training and Testing Center (LTTC), one of Asia’s leading testing institutions based in Taiwan, this volume is a useful reference for evaluating, developing, and validating local tests of English and their societal impact. Comprehensive and research-based, chapters cover historic backgrounds, sociocultural contexts, test quality, international standing, and future considerations. Ideal for graduate students, researchers, and scholars in language assessment, TESOL/TEFL, and applied linguistics, this book will also be of interest to language teaching professionals, language test developers, and graduate students in Asian studies and international education, intercultural communication, and intercultural studies.

Book Description
Written by experts in the field, this book describes the Personal Network architecture and its various components This book focuses on networking and security aspects of Personal Networks (PNs). Given a single user, the authors propose an architecture for PNs in which devices are divided into one of two types of nodes: personal nodes and foreign nodes. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate the ways in which PNs can be formed in a self-organized and secure way, how they can be interconnected using infrastructure networks, how multiple PNs can be connected, and how their services and resources can be shared. In addition, the book shows how security and ease-of-use can be achieved through automatic configuration and how mobility can be supported through adaptability and self-organization. The motivations for the PN concept, the PN architecture, its functionalities and features, as well as future challenges are covered in depth. Finally, the authors consider the potential applications for PNs and briefly discuss additional support systems for PN applications. The latter includes service discovery and context information management among others. Key Features: Describes the PN network architecture and its various components in-depth Written by experts who developed this concept Discusses the newer topic of federations of PNs Considers potential PN applications, and demonstrates how applications support systems, such as service discovery and context management, can assist the applications Provides an insight into the challenges of future personal networking, architectures for PNs, potential and important solutions, and their implications This book will serve as an invaluable reference for researchers, developers, and standardization experts in mobile and wireless communication systems and services. It will also be of interest to postgraduate students in the field of telecommunications.

Book Description
This book deals with commonly reported accusations about the nature of teacher education based on arguments and disagreements about what teacher education should do, how it should do it and what it should produce in its graduates. Much of these accusations are on out of date or obsolete ideals of the "good" teacher. It is a philosophical exploration of the crisis in which teacher education finds itself in the world of neo-liberal capitalism, privatization, accountability, consumerism and globalization. The book develops a meta-theory of teacher education which analyses three major approaches to teacher education (Enlightenment, Romanticism, and Belief-Oriented programs), each of them suggest a different epistemological and ethical world-view. Accordingly, each of them lead to a different vision of teachers' identity, and inform different type of programs of teacher education. While critically discussing how each of the three approaches is manifested in various Teacher Education programs, the book proposes a new synthesis arising from them. Although seemingly contradictory, they can be seen as various aspects of a more "balanced", multifaceted and adequate ideal of a better way to prepare teachers in the present era. Ways of Learning to Teach is a tribute to the work of teacher educators and is informing for anyone who is interested in teaching and learning in the 21st century. This is a compelling book that brings together a number of conflicting (and often taken-for-granted) views of teacher preparation in ways that helps to makes sense of the complex enterprise that is teacher education. Back offers an interesting and thought provoking way of understanding criticisms about teacher education and offers a positive and productive way forward. This book is a must read for teacher educators.

Book Description
Transcranial stimulation encompasses noninvasive methods that transmit physical fields-such as magnetic, electric, ultrasound, and light-to the brain to modulate its function. The most widespread approach, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), has emerged as an important tool in several areas of neuroscience as well as in clinical applications in psychiatry and neurology. Originally envisioned as a way to measure the responsiveness and conduction speed of neurons and synapses in the brain and spinal cord, TMS has also become an important tool for changing the activity of brain neurons and the functions they subserve as well as an causal adjunct to brain imaging and mapping techniques. Along with transcranial electrical stimulation techniques, TMS has diffused far beyond the borders of clinical neurophysiology and into cognitive, perceptual, behavioural, and therapeutic investigation and attracted a highly diverse group of users and would-be users. Another major success of TMS has been as a treatment in psychiatry, where it is now in routine use worldwide. The field of noninvasive neuromodulation has matured and diversified considerably in the past decade, with an expansion in the number of tools available and our understanding of their mechanisms of action. This second edition of The Oxford Handbook of Transcranial Stimulation brings together the latest developments and important advances in all areas of Transcranial stimulation. The new volume captures the rapid progress made since the first edition, and provides an authoritative and comprehensive review of the state of the art. It also highlights challenges, opportunities, and future directions for this rapidly changing field. The book focuses on the scientific and technical background required to understand transcranial stimulation techniques and a wide-ranging survey of their burgeoning applications in neurophysiology, neuroscience, and therapy. Each of its six sections deals with a major area and is edited by an international authority therein. It will serve researchers, clinicians, students, and others as the definitive text in this area for years to come.
