“El cine es tanto un pensamiento que adquiere forma como una forma que permite pensar”, decía Jean-Luc Godard. Y François Truffaut añadió: “Ningún niño francés ha soñado nunca en convertirse en crítico de cine cuando sea mayor”. Entre estas dos afirmaciones se debate, desde sus inicios, el espíritu de una revista como Cahiers du Cinéma. Por un lado, la reflexión sobre la naturaleza del cine, hacer hablar a las películas, intentar proponer una moral cinematográfica. Por otro, el esfuerzo de convertir todo eso en una práctica que no puede ser un juego de niños, que comporta una responsabilidad ante la sociedad y los lectores. Teorizar el cine se convirtió en una pasión que se alimentaba del estructuralismo, la semiología, el marxismo o el psicoanálisis, así como de los textos al respecto de Roland Barthes, Louis Althusser, Jacques Lacan, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida o Jacques Rancière. La crítica, en cambio, giró siempre alrededor de la “conexión”: había que conectar las películas con los lectores, con las otras películas, con las comunidades de cinéfilos, con las otras artes, con las metáforas del mundo... Poco a poco, sin embargo, ambas disciplinas han llegado a coincidir incluso en algunas de sus conclusiones, hasta el punto de que críticos fundamentales como Serge Daney pueden considerarse teóricos de la imagen y, en el otro lado, teóricos como Alain Bergala han escrito algunos de los mejores libros de crítica de los últimos tiempos.
