Book Description
Avalanche photodiodes (APDS) are quantum optical detectors that are used for visible and near infrared optical detection applications. Although APDs are compact, rugged, and have an internal gain mechanism that is suitable for low light intensity; their responsivity, and therefore their output, is strongly dependent on the device temperature. Thermoelectric coolers (TEC) offers a suitable solution to this problem. A TEC is a solid state cooling device, which can be controlled by changing its current. TECs are compact and rugged, and they can precisely control the temperature to within 0.1 C with more than a 150 C temperature gradient between its surfaces. In this Memorandum, a proportional integral (PI) temperature controller for APDs using a TEC is discussed. The controller is compact and can successfully cool the APD to almost 0 C in an ambient temperature environment of up to 27 C. Refaat, Tamer F. and Luck, William S., Jr. and DeYoung, Russell J. Photodetectors
Author: Silvano Donati
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119769914
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 464
Book Description
Explore this comprehensive introduction to the foundations of photodetection from one of the leading voices in the field The newly revised Photodetectors: Devices, Circuits and Applications delivers a thoroughly updated exploration of the fundamentals of photodetection and the novel technologies and concepts that have arisen since the release of the first edition twenty years ago. The book offers discussions of established and emerging photodetection technologies, including photomultipliers, the SPAD, the SiPM, the SNSPD, the UTC, the WGPD/TWPD, the QWIP, and the LT-GaAs. New examinations of correlation measurements on ultrafast pulses and single-photon detectors for quantum communications and LiDARs have also been added. Each chapter includes selected problems for students to work through to aid in learning and retention. A booklet of solutions is also provided. The book is especially ideal for students and faculties of Engineering, with an emphasis on first principles, design, and the engineering of photodetectors. Issues in the book are grouped through the development of concepts, as opposed to collections of technical details. Perfect for undergraduate students interested in the science or design of modern optoelectronics, Photodetectors: Devices, Circuits and Applications also belongs on the bookshelves of professors teaching PhD seminars in advanced courses on photodetection and noise, as well as engineers and physicists seeking a guide to an optimum photodetection solution.

Optical Communications
Author: Jürgen Franz
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849309359
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 744
Book Description
The advantages of optical communications are many: ultra-high speed, highly reliable information transmission, and cost-effective modulation and transmission links to name but a few. It is no surprise that optical fiber communications systems are now in extensive use all over the world. Along with software and microelectronics, optical communication represents a key technology of modern telecommunication systems. Optical Communications: Components and Systems provides the basic material required for advanced study in theory and applications of optical fiber and space communication systems. After a review of some fundamental background material, component-based chapters discuss all relevant passive and active optical and optoelectronic components used in point-to-point links and in networks. Systems chapters address the analysis and optimization of both incoherent and coherent systems, introduce fiber optic link design, and discuss physical limits. The authors also provide an overview of applications such as optical networks and optical free-space communications. The advanced interactive multimedia communications of today and the future rely on optical fiber and space communication techniques. Optical Communications: Components and Systems offers engineers and physicists a working reference for the selection and design of optical communication systems and provides engineering students with a valuable text that prepares them for work in this essential and rapidly growing field.
