Abstract: Benzocaine, a local anesthetic for mammals, has potential for use as a general anesthetic in finfish. Its pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and residue profiles were characterized to support its approval in fish. To compare interspecies and temperature differences of these parameters channel catfish were studied at 16, 21, and 260C and yellow perch at 160C. The feasibility of "crop grouping" was investigated with a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model as a means to reduce the amount of testing required for aquaculture drug registration.
