Book Description
Sherrie Daly, the former wife of PGA tour superstar John Daly, takes a swing at the controversial man called “Wild Thing” in this jaw-dropping memoir about what really goes on behind the scenes of professional golf. In this explosive tell-all, Sherrie Daly goes beyond the polite clapping, collared shirts, and hushed voices and exposes the darker side of the golf world: the groupies, party-crazed athletes, and blatant infidelity. After being married to player (in all senses of the word) John Daly for nine years, Sherrie knows this better than anyone. It’s no secret that John, one of the PGA tour’s most popular stars, was known for his erratic behavior and on-the-edge lifestyle as much as for his powerful, grip-it-and-rip-it style on the green. But Sherrie goes beyond the public persona to dish on John’s out-of-control antics throughout their marriage, many of which she helped cover up to protect his career, and his self-destructive addictions to whiskey, sex, and gambling, which led him to lose one of his biggest purses ever—nearly one million dollars—in an hour. She writes candidly about the physical and emotional abuse she endured and why she continued to play the role of golf wife despite the trashed hotel rooms, wrecked homes, and demolished cars. Then she turns the tables on herself, sharing the truth behind her catfights with his girlfriends, her legal troubles, and especially the night John alleged she attacked him with a steak knife. After years in the exclusive players’ wives club, Sherrie Daly is Teed Off and ready to rip the game’s well-groomed facade to shreds.

Book Description
The grandmother granddaughter conversation examined in this book makes explicit what the detailed study of interaction reveals about two social problems--"bulimia" and "grandparent caregiving." For the first time, systematic attention is given to interactional activities through which family members display ordinary yet contradictory concerns about health and illness: * a grandmother's (who is also a registered nurse) attempts to initiate, confront, and remedy her granddaughter's lack of responsibility in admitting bulimic "problems" and committing to professional medical assistance; * a granddaughter's methods for avoiding ownership of the alleged bulimic problems by discounting the legitimacy of her grandmother's expressed concerns. Through analysis of a single audio-recorded and transcribed conversation, Wayne Beach reveals the altogether pervasive and often troubled talk surrounding family medical predicaments. From a careful review of extant theories that seek to explain eating disorders and grandparent caregiving, it becomes clear that an overreliance on self-report data has promoted underspecified understandings of "social contexts" -- conceptualizations void of real time practices and interactional consequences mirroring how families manage their daily affairs and understandings regarding health and illness. In contrast, this volume draws attention to family members' embodied interactional activities. Here it is seen, for example, how methods for expressing concern and caring by individuals may nevertheless eventuate in interactional troubles and problems between family members. The analysis reveals that, while displays of basic concerns for others' health and well being are routine occurrences between family members in home environments -- and of course, across friendship and various support networks -- even the delicate and well-intended management of such occasions guarantees neither agreement on the nature of the alleged "problems" nor, consequently, a commitment to seek professional help as a means of remedying a medical condition. In such cases, the very existence of an illness is itself a matter of some contention to be interactionally worked out. And it is perhaps both predictable and symptomatic that those explicitly denying (or as with the granddaughter, indirectly failing to admit) that problematic health behaviors exist, also somehow let it be made known that far too much attention is being given to possibilities and consequences of illness in the first instance. Implications of this investigation extend well beyond "bulimia" and "grandparent caregiving" to a vast array of casual and institutional involvements between family members, friends, and bureaucratic representatives such as those involved in long-term caregiving, dealing with cancer and Alzheimer's disease, or conducting psychiatric interviews and HIV/AIDS counseling sessions. Findings regarding the interactionally organized nature of talk about bulimia, as well as the problematic nature of caregiving, will be of value to researchers focusing on language and social interaction, health practitioners, and families alike. This volume includes the full transcript of the conversation in the case study. A copy of the audio-recording is available for classroom adoption and/or personal purchase by contacting: Wayne A. Beach, School of Communication, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182-4516.

Book Description
As most of the world went into COVID-19 lockdown, Marjie was determined to keep her spirits up the same way she always has--by writing. She began to share her thoughts, covering the emotional and subjective gamut on her Facebook page. Among other things, she investigated the development of a young hawk family growing up in a nearby tree; told about the experience of raising monarch butterflies; shared observations about her mother's descent into dementia; and relayed stories about her life lived in Canada and the United States. She did not realize how many of her friends were looking for encouragement from her writing until they started to chat about the postings and encouraged her to publish them. This former journalist had been writing to the published page for decades, but she hadn't been writing on Facebook from that perspective. After lockdown was over, she decided to publish portions. Here are just a few examples of her whimsical writing style:"Today, little wavelets of sadness were flittering by like the departing breath of someone's soul. I can, today, feel the fear, the grief that is out there but not yet right here.""If I hang around a house long enough, I don't get cabin fever, I come down with the Property Brothers virus.""When I developed a fever and started to shiver uncontrollably, we both cracked up at how my voice was shaking. We were like kids on the loose with helium.""It was a slow golf game. I glanced over and saw His Collarship unknowingly trailing a clump of Spanish moss. I called over, 'Game's so slow you've got Spanish moss growing on you.'""Thou shalt not have your computer below your head. I already see my own double chin more often than I'd like. If I wanted to see everyone else's, I would have become a cosmetic surgeon. My favorite view is the guillotine, where the chair is lower than the table and all you see on screen is this talking head, the body, apparently, still back in bed."
