Book Description
Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 2,3, University of Southern Denmark (Department of Marketing & Management), course: Management of Innovation Processes, language: English, abstract: Technological discontinuities have been characterizing many markets for several years. Essential drivers for that are the Internet and startups, which make use of this technology in order to create new business models. This progress is quite often challenging established firms and call for them to leave their “comfort zone”. In contradiction to this competitive perspective, this paper aims to highlight the synergies between companies that have already been operating for many years and new market entrants. By doing so, it is examined how both may interact with the aim of commercializing products and sustaining innovation. Thereby, corporate incubators, corporate venture capitalists and non-equity relationships between established firms and startups are considered as forms of cooperation. In addition to that and by using the data of a conducted survey, insights into the experiences and expectations of incumbents and startups will be also provided. Following this, managerial implications shall serve as a base for future cooperation and the management of technological discontinuities.

Book Description
Innovations based on radically new technologies are believed to create advantages for entrants over incumbents in the relevant markets. Under what circumstances is this true? To what extent do incumbents' disadvantages stem from their failure to make timely commitments to new capabilities and new strategies as opposed to their inability to implement those commitments effectively? We explore those questions in relation to recent literature in economics and organization theory and introduce the concept of the "value network." Historical evidence suggests that entrants find greatest advantage when innovations disrupt established trajectories of technological progress, a circumstance associated with moves to new value networks. The incumbent's disadvantage, hence, seems to be associated with an inability to change strategies, not technologies.

Book Description
Published in 1998. In the past year the 300 largest global companies increased their research budgets by an average of 12 per cent. Governments now measure how technologically advanced they are as they worry about their trade balances and unemployment. Many public sector organizations, for example hospitals, universities and welfare agencies, are struggling to keep up with the rate of technological progress. The selections in this book provide a number of insights on how private firms can be more innovative and public sector organizations can keep up with rapid technological change. They emphasize both radical and incremental innovations and both product and process innovation. In particular the advanced manufacturing technologies so central to Piore and Sabel’s ’Second Industrial Divide’ receive a great deal of attention. Finally, the consequences of innovation are the focus of the last section.

Book Description
In 1987 the Swedish National Board for Technical Development (STU, later becoming the Swedish National Board for Industrial and Technical Development, NUTEK) initiated a study of Sweden's Technological Systems and Future Development Potential. A comprehensive, interdisciplinary study was envisioned, yielding not only useful insight but also a permanent competence base for future analyses of technological systems and technology policy in Sweden. Three leading Swedish research institutes were invited to participate: the Industrial Institute for Economic and Social Research in Stockholm, the Department ofIndustrial Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, and the Research Policy Institute at the University of Lund. I was invited to direct the project. The project group decided to focus initially on a particular technological system, namely factory automation, to be followed by similar studies of other systems. Numerous publications have resulted from the project thus far. The current volume represents a summary of our work on factory automation. It consists of several original essays and of some previously published papers which have been edited, in some cases substantially, in order to form a comprehensive and coherent picture of a technological system. To our knowledge, this is the first in-depth analysis of a technological system designed as a component of a systematic study of technological systems more generally. At the time of this writing, three further studies on electronics and computers, pharmaceuticals, and powder technology are under way, to be published in a later volume.

Book Description
Usually firms introduce new technology in an incremental way, wisely seeking to minimise the adverse effects which business and employees might face. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes technological discontinuities occur when radically different technological systems and working practices are implemented, with the possibility of widespread disruption and conflict. This book looks at this topical issue through the experiences of the international giants of the Finnish paper industry - an industry at the cutting edge of fundamental technological innovation.
