The majority of economic activities requiring the use of Portland cement are currently in Yukon and the western part of the NWT. The study therefore focused on the feasibility of a small scale Portland cement operation to satisify the market in this area. The study defines the current uses, major users and suppliers of Portland cement and how current users' needs are met; predicts the resource needs, transportation methods and price requirements of current and potential users from 1980-2000; assesses the potential for the small scale vertical kiln technology or alternative to meet these requirements on a cost competitive basis, indicating the sources of raw materials, supply methods and cost (capital and operating) needed for such a venture, and any drawbacks to applying this technology or alternatives; and describes the optimum conditions under which the small scale vertical kiln technology or alternatives can be applied to meet the current or predicted Portland cement requirements.
