Book Description
Technical, Commerical and Regulatory Challenges of QoS provides a comprehensive examination of Internet QoS theory, standards, vendor implementation and network deployment from the practitioner's point of view, including extensive discussion of related economic and regulatory issues. Written in a technology-light way so that a variety of professionals and researchers in the information and networking industries can easily grasp the material. Includes case studies based on real-world experiences from industry. The author starts by discussing the economic, regulatory and technical challenges of the existing QoS model. Key coverage includes defining a clear business model for selling and buying QoS in relation to current and future direction of government regulation and QoS interoperability (or lack thereof) between carriers and networking devices. The author then demonstrates how to improve the current QoS model to create a clear selling point, less regulation uncertainty, and higher chance of deployment success. This includes discussion of QoS re-packaging to end-users; economic and regulatory benefits of the re-packaging; and the overall benefits of an improved technical approach. Finally, the author discusses the future evolution of QoS from an Internet philosophy perspective and lets the reader draw the conclusions. This book is the first QoS book to provide in depth coverage on the commercial and regulatory aspects of QoS, in addition to the technical aspect. From that, readers can grasp the commercial and regulatory issues of QoS and their implications on the overall QoS business model. This book is also the first QoS book to provide case studies of real world QoS deployments, contributed by the people who did the actual deployments. From that, readers can grasp the practical issues of QoS in real world. This book is also the first QoS book to cover both wireline QoS and wireless QoS. Readers can grasp the QoS issues in the wireless world. The book was reviewed and endorsed by a long list of prominent industrial and academic figures. - Discusses QoS technology in relation to economic and regulatory issues - Includes case studies based on real-world examples from industry practitioners - Provides unique insight into how to improve the current QoS model to create a clear selling point, less regulatory uncertainty, and higher chance of deployment success

Book Description
The book presents a comprehensive view on Flow-Aware Networking. It starts with a brief overview of the known QoS architectures based on the concept of a flow. Then, the original FAN concept is presented, along with its variations proposed by the authors. The next chapter covers a very valuable feature of the FAN architecture, namely its ability to assure net neutrality. The chapters that follow will discuss, in detail, a variety of issues making the FAN concept implementable, including congestion control, fairness, resilience to failures, service differentiation and degradation. The final chapter presents the test implementation of the FAN router, including the environment used and performance tests. Chapters are supplemented with problems to solve, along with their solutions. The pedagogical character of the book is supported by a number of illustrative examples contained in most of the chapters. At the end of the book, a glossary of the key terms is included, along with a comprehensive bibliography. Flow-based traffic management is currently becoming a mainstream. There is plenty of Quality of Service (QoS) techniques based on flows. Software-Defined Networking with its dominant protocol OpenFlow also follows this trend. Flow-Aware Networking (FAN) is a promising QoS architecture. Information on FAN can be found in various research papers. It is, therefore highly scattered. This book gathers practically all relevant information regarding FAN and puts it together. Quality of Service assurance is one of the key challenges of today’s Internet. The existing approaches to provide QoS do not meet expectations of network operators, managers and users although numerous efforts in this area have been reported. One of the most promising concepts is the Flow-Aware Network (FAN). FAN can play a key role in assuring the net neutrality, smoothly combining interests of all the involved parties. The authors of the proposal have been involved in FAN research practically since its inception at the start of the 21st century. The book reports the wide experiences the authors accumulated in the subject area during the work on common FAN-related projects conducted with the team of James Roberts that proposed the original FAN concept as well as other leading research groups in Europe and the USA. One of the aims of the book is to accompany courses taught by the authors.

Book Description
The transportation of multimedia over the network requires timely and errorless transmission much more strictly than other data. This had led to special protocols and to special treatment in multimedia applications (telephony, IP-TV, streaming) to overcome network issues. This book begins with an overview of the vast market combined with the user’s expectations. The base mechanisms of the audio/video coding (H.26x etc.) are explained to understand characteristics of the generated network traffic. Further chapters treat common specialized underlying IP network functions which cope with multimedia data in conjunction which special time adaption measures. Based on those standard functions these chapters can treat uniformly SIP, H.248, High-End IP-TV, Webcast, Signage etc. A special section is devoted to home networks which challenge high-end service delivery due to possibly unreliable management. The whole book treats concepts described in accessible IP-based standards and which are implemented broadly. The book is aimed at graduate students/practitioners with good basic knowledge in computer networking. It provides the reader with all concepts of currently used IP technologies of how to deliver multimedia efficiently to the end user.

Book Description
“Computing Networks” explores the core of the new distributed computing infrastructures we are using today: the networking systems of clusters, grids and clouds. It helps network designers and distributed-application developers and users to better understand the technologies, specificities, constraints and benefits of these different infrastructures’ communication systems. Cloud Computing will give the possibility for millions of users to process data anytime, anywhere, while being eco-friendly. In order to deliver this emerging traffic in a timely, cost-efficient, energy-efficient, and reliable manner over long-distance networks, several issues such as quality of service, security, metrology, network-resource scheduling and virtualization are being investigated since 15 years. “Computing Networks” explores the core of clusters, grids and clouds networks, giving designers, application developers and users the keys to better construct and use these powerful infrastructures.
