Teaching One Moment at a Time
Author: Dawn Skorczewski
Publisher: Univ of Massachusetts Press
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 176
Book Description
Based on the author's longtime experience as an instructor of composition, this book explores the "delicate negotiation" between teacher and student that determines success or failure in writing courses. Dawn Skorczewski's focus is on the role of the teacher in shaping this classroom dynamic, particularly the ways in which theoretical presuppositions and personal expectations influence the responses elicited from students. Drawing on the insights of psychoanalysis as well as recent infant research, Skorczewski argues that the teacher who recognizes the beliefs she brings to the classroom is equipped to listen to her students more carefully than the teacher who holds her beliefs so closely that she can no longer see them as beliefs. To show how these unconscious assumptions come into play and to explain their effects, Skorczewski looks at a series of key "moments" in the life of a writing class. She examines what it means to enter a classroom and take on the role of a teacher; the challenge of leading a discussion; the art of designing effective writing assignments; the difficulties involved in evaluating student writing; the negotiation of issues of authority; and the pros and cons of self-revelation. In each case the author offers not only an analysis of the disruptions that characterize these pedagogical moments but also practical advice for dealing with them. Although informed by theory, the emphasis throughout is on real issues faced by real teachers in their writing courses.

One Moment
Author: Kristina McBride
Publisher: Egmont USA
ISBN: 1606842692
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 246
Book Description
Following on the heels of her "must-read" debut novel (New York Times best-selling author Jay Asher) One Moment is perfect for fans of Sara Zarr and Gayle Forman. This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie’s life. Now it’s the one she’d do anything to forget. Maggie remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party. She remembers climbing the trail with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can’t she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below–dead? As Maggie’s memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding? The latest novel from the author of The Tension of Opposites, One Moment is a mysterious, searing look at how an instant can change everything you believe about the world around you. Praise for One Moment: "Infused with page-turning mystery, One Moment is as heartbreakingly real as it is unexpectedly romantic."—Cat Patrick, author of Forgotten and Revived "One Moment took my breath away. Beautifully written, achingly romantic, and so much tension the pages seem like they're turning themselves. One of the best books I've read in ages."—Lauren Barnholdt, author of Two-Way Street "A page-tuner that grabbed me by the throat, and was impossible to put down!"—Katrina Kittle, author of Reasons to Be Happy "Good, solid drama about the power of secrets to test the bounds of friendship, with just enough tension to satisfy teen readers."—Kirkus Reviews "McBride (The Tension of Opposites) skillfully interweaves Maggie’s flashes of memory with present action, making for a tense and absorbing psychological mystery."—Publishers Weekly

The Best Story
Author: Eileen Spinelli
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101646802
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 36
Book Description
The best story is one that comes from the heart. The library is having a contest for the best story, and the quirky narrator of this book just has to win that rollercoaster ride with her favorite author! But what makes a story the best? Her brother Tim says the best stories have lots of action. Her father thinks the best stories are the funniest. And Aunt Jane tells her that the best stories have to make people cry. A story that does all these things doesn't seem quite right, though, and the one thing the whole family can agree on is that the best story has to be your own. Anne Wilsdorf's hilarious illustrations perfectly capture this colorful family and their outrageous stories in Eileen Spinelli's heartfelt tale about creativity and finding your own voice.
