Book Description
Abstract: "Very High Frequency (VHF) Digital Link Mode 3 is the next step in an effort by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to provide a data link between aircraft and ground controllers to support applications such as Air Traffic Control, weather updates and surveillance. It provides an acknowledged connectionless data link over a TDMA based medium access control mechanism. The benefits of such air/ground data subnetworks can be maximized by interconnecting them with other ground subnetworks. To achieve this seamless interconnection a concept called Aeronautical Telecommunication Network (ATN) based on the ISO Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) has been proposed by ICAO. However, in recent years there has been a concern over the need for developing ATN when TCP/IP is already commercially available to achieve all the goals of such an interconnection. In this project VDL Mode 3 simulation models were developed in OPNET (Optmized Network Engineering Tools). Using these models, simulations were conducted to study the performance of the proposed protocols in terms of end to end message transfer delay. A comparison is also done with similar models developed by MITRE Corp and it was observed that models developed herein exhibit better performance. The reasons for this improvement are discussed in this report. Also in this project, it has been shown that TCP/IP can easily be interfaced with VDL Mode 3 and that Mobile IP can satisfactorily be used to handle aircraft mobility. Simulations have been conducted to study the delay experienced in performing Mobile IP management functions followed a TCP connection setup when an aircraft enters a service volume under a ground station's control. The results of these simulations were compared with the results of similar simulations done by MITRE for ATN over VDL Mode 3. Performance of the system using TCP/IP was found to be superior to the reported performance of ATN, the difference largely due to the differences in the underlying VDL Mode 3 models."

Book Description
An exciting new technology, described by the one who inventedit This is the first book dedicated to cognitive radio, a promisingnew technology that is poised to revolutionize thetelecommunications industry with increased wireless flexibility.Cognitive radio technology integrates computational intelligenceinto software-defined radio for embedded intelligent agents thatadapt to RF environments and user needs. Using this technology, users can more fully exploit the radio spectrum and servicesavailable from wireless connectivity. For example, an attempt tosend a 10MB e-mail in a zone where carrier charges are high mightcause a cognitive radio to alert its user and suggest waiting untilgetting to the office to use the LAN instead. Cognitive RadioArchitecture examines an "ideal cognitive radio" that featuresautonomous machine learning, computer vision, and spoken or writtenlanguage perception. The author of this exciting new book is the inventor of thetechnology and a leader in the field. Following his step-by-stepintroduction, readers can start building aware/adaptive radios andthen make steps towards cognitive radio. After an introduction toadaptive, aware, and cognitive radio, the author develops threemajor themes in three sections: Foundations Radio Competence User Domain Competence The book makes the design principles of cognitive radio moreaccessible to students of teleinformatics, as well as to wirelesscommunications systems developers. It therefore embraces thepractice of cognitive radio as well as the theory. In particular, the publication develops a cognitive architecture that integratesdisparate disciplines, including autonomous machine learning, computer vision, and language perception technologies. Anaccompanying CD-ROM contains the Java source code and compiledclass files for applications developed in the book. In addition, for the convenience of the reader, Web resources introducing keyconcepts such as speech applications programmer interfaces (APIs)are included. Although still five to ten years away from full deployment, telecommunications giants and research labs around the world arealready dedicating R&D to this new technology.Telecommunications engineers as well as advanced undergraduate andgraduate students can learn the promising possibilities of thisinnovative technology from the one who invented it. Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials arenot included as part of eBook file.

Book Description
Now the standardisation work of DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting)system is finished many broadcast organisations, network providersand receiver manufacturers in European countries and outside ofEurope (for example Canada and the Far East) will be installing DABbroadcast services as pilot projects or public services. Inaddition some value added services (data and video services) areunder development or have already started as pilot projects. The new digital broadcast system DAB distinguishes itself fromexisting conventional broadcast systems, and the various newinternational standards and related documents (from ITU-R, ISO/IEC,ETSI, EBU, EUREKA147, and others) are not readily available and aredifficult to read for users. Therefore it is essential that a wellstructured technical handbook should be available. The Second Edition of Digital Audio Broadcasting has beenfully updated with new sections and chapters added to reflect allthe latest developments and advances. Digital Audio Broadcasting: Provides a fully updated comprehensive overview of DAB Covers international standards, applications and othertechnical issues Combines the expertise of leading researchers in the field ofDAB Now covers such new areas as: IP-Tunneling via DAB; ElectronicProgramme Guide for DAB; and Metadata A comprehensive overview of DAB specifically written forplanning and system engineers, developers for professional anddomestic equipment manufacturers, service providers, as well aspostgraduate students and lecturers in communicationstechnology.
