Trial Implementations of the Tank Crewman Skills Training Program (TCST).
Author: Richard E. O'Brien
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
This report describes the adaptation of a modular, performance based, individually-paced tank crewman skills training program (TCST) for trial implementation in five different tank crew train-up situations: (1) mobilization train-up of active and reserve crewmen in a training center environment, (2) mobilization train-up of training center crews, (3) individual readiness training of armor crewmen preparing for unit gunnery training, (4) accelerated training of tank crew replacements, and (5) accelerated refresher training of experienced crews deprived of regular gunnery training. Two of the five studies produced positive results. In one, the training center active and reserve mobilization train-up, TCST produced trainee skill levels and opinions superior to those resulting from two alternative programs. In the other, the accelerated tank crew replacement training, TCST was used successfully in rapidly preparing non-11E soldiers to fill in as gunners and loaders on a gunnery qualification test--a Table VIII test in which the crews with replacements performed as well as experienced intact crews. Results of the other three trial implementations were inconclusive. A need exists for some kind of TCST to be used in preparing combat ready crews. The TCST program has a number of promising features, but needs further development. Of particular importance is the need for detailed trainer guidance on how to plan, schedule and deliver training.

Device-based Training of Armor Crewmen
Author: Gary A. Moody

ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
Using the Abrams Tank Crewman One-Step Unit Training as a case study, this study identifies alternative approaches for individual training and analyzes their cost implications. It suggests that although the current course's content and length is consistent with job requirements in the initial duty assignment, more efficient training techniques can be used in resident instruction. The analysis shows that many armor-specific tasks currently taught using tanks can be taught using training aids, devices, simulators, and simulations (TADSS). In addition, the amount of computer-based training (CBT) can be increased in basic training. Expanded use of TADSS to replace training on vehicles can provide substantial savings in operating and support costs, but the level of costs and savings depends on how the devices and course changes are implemented. If new trainers and simulators must be developed and procured, savings will be cut. The study also found that savings differ across devices. Although substituting TADSS for tanks appears cost effective, the evidence for CBT is mixed.
