Book Description
This book argues that we should regard walking and talking in a single rhythmic vision. In doing so, it contributes to the theory of prosody, our understanding of respiration and looking, and, in sum, to the particular links, across the board, between the human characteristics of bipedal walking and meaningful talk. The author first introduces the philosophical, neurological, anthropological, and aesthetic aspects of the subject in historical perspective, then focuses on rhetoric and introduces a tension between the small and large issues of rhythm. He thereupon turns his attention to the roles of breathing in poetry—as a life-and-death matter, with attention to beats and walking poems. This opens onto technical concepts from the classical traditions of rhetoric and philology. Turning to the relationship between prosody and motion, he considers both animals and human beings as both ostensibly able-bodied creatures and presumptively disabled ones. Finally, he looks at dancing and writing as aspects of walking and talking, with special attention to motion in Arabic and Chinese calligraphy. The final chapters of the book provide a series of interrelated representative case studies.

Minute by Minute
Author: Larry Carpenter
Publisher: Clovercroft Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
Being a scoutmaster can be one of the most rewarding things a person can do. But it can be a lot of work! Ask any scoutmaster what’s the hardest part of the job, and one of the most common responses you will get would be coming up with the scoutmaster’s minutes. Week after week, over fifty times a year, the scoutmaster must come up with an inspiring, educational, and entertainment message for the Scouts. Let’s face it. Not every scoutmaster is the most gifted public speaker. Research shows that the number one fear of people is speaking in public. Just because a scoutmaster loves to hike, camp, teach, lead, and motivate, doesn’t mean that they are comfortable speaking in front of a group. And how do you come up with inspiring stories, instructional words of wisdom and motivational messages, week after week? Long-time Scout leader, Larry Carpenter, has written a book that can be a lifesaver for any scoutmaster. This collection of 100 of the best scoutmaster’s minutes offers brief messages that are themed to topics, including the Scout Oath, Law, Motto and Slogan. Additional minutes cover other topics, such as persistence, honesty, leadership, and other positive character traits. This book makes a perfect gift for your scoutmaster. Or, if you are a scoutmaster who is on the spot once a week, make it a gift to yourself!

My Walk with My Sister
Author: Karen Boothe
Publisher: Covenant Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1643005545
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 129
Book Description
Everyone has noticed changes in Brenda. She has become more demanding, caring less about her appearance, and not letting anyone come to her house-alienating friends. Then the call comes from her employer. "Brenda didn't show up for work today." Brenda has always received awards for never missing work. Her family had to break into her home when she didn't answer the door. She was lying on the bed and acted as if nothing is wrong. What they discovered when they open the door was breathtaking. She has been hoarding, and her home was filthy. But that's not the only discovery. Brenda was diagnosed at age fifty-six with a rare brain disorder, Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD). This disease is so rare that it is hard to diagnose-hard to treat, hard to deal with, and hard to pronounce-even harder to accept. All cases of FTD present differently. Treatment is different for each patient, so no one can tell you what to expect. Her sister becomes her primary caregiver. Along with help from family and friends, they walked the journey of frontotemporal degeneration together. Trial and error became the norm. They learned to love and accept the new Brenda, one who is childlike, loving, and happy. Our hope is that this book will give comfort to families who have a family member or friend with FTD. Please know that your journey is never walked alone. God is ever present and sometimes sends a sign that he loves you and everything is going to be okay.
