Book Description
Excerpt from Tales From Blackwood, Vol. 1: New Series I have tried both Worlds, Old and New; and so far as faults and follies go, I don't think there is much to choose between them. My present busi ness is with the faults and follies of my own coun try, with which I feel more especially competent to deal, and which I am most desirous to see corrected and reformed. Having violently reacted from them myself, it is only natural that I should be consumed by the fervour of proselytism, and should, regardless of consequences, exhibit myself as a warning, if need be, to those I wish to serve. When I first appeared upon the social horizon, I may say with out vanity that I was the kind of girl who in Lon don would have been called a stunner, a scream er, and who in New York is sometimes described as a bouncer. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales From Blackwood, Vol. 5 After we had, with some difficulty, got on the inner side of the island, a pilot came on board and took charge of the vessel. The first thing he did was to run us on a sandbank, off which we got with no small labour, and by the united exertions of sailors and passengers, and at length entered the river. In our impatience to land, I and my friend left the schooner in a cockleshell of a boat, which upset in the surge, and we found ourselves flounder ing in the water. Luckily it was not very deep, and we escaped with a thorough drenching. When we had scrambled on shore, we gazed about us for some time before we could persuade ourselves that we were actually upon land, so unnatural was its aspect. It was, without exception, the strangest coast we had ever seen, and there was scarcely a possibility of distinguishing the boundary between earth and water. The green grass grew down to the edge of the green sea, and there was only the streak of white foam left by the latter upon the former to serve as a line of demarcation. Before us was a perfectly level plain, a hundred or more miles in extent, covered with long fine grass, rollingnu v nu J. Unmb im idaad. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales From Blackwood, Vol. 1 Sively rapid, it was, nevertheless, proceeding at a steady ratio. As for the ordinary means and appli anoes by which men contrive to recruit their ex hansted exchequers, I knew none of them. Work I abhorred with a detestation worthy of a scion of nobility; and, I believe, you could just as soon have persuaded the lineal representative of the Howards or Percys to exhibit himself in the character Of a mountebank, as have got me to trust my person On the pinnacle of a three-legged stool. The rule of three is all very well for base mechanical souls; but I flatter myself I have an intellect too large to be limited to a ledger. Augustus, said my poor mother to me, while stroking my hyacinthine tresses, one fine morning, in the very dawn and budding-time of my existence - Augustus, my dear boy, whatever you do, never forget that you are a gentleman. The maternal maxim sunk deeply into my heart, and I never for a moment have forgotten it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. And then, you see, Impatience is apt to take its turn. Never mind the cups and saucers - I'll make that all right With the father; and he is no model of Patience, any way.
