Several solvothermal synthetic methods have been developed to produce novel low-dimensional magnetic materials and determine their structure-properties relationships. Two main classes of compounds were investigated, including iron selenides and transition metal formate-chlorides. Chapter 2 details the development of the first solution-based synthetic route to superconducting iron (II) selenide. Samples were found to retain superconducting properties only when air and water were rigorously excluded from the synthesis. Chapter 3 presents the synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of two new mixed-valence compounds with infinite[subscript infinity] 1(FeSe2) tetrahedral chains separated by Fe-amine complexes. The use of different Fe-amine complexes allows for tuning of the magnetic properties without changing the general structural motif. Chapters 4 and 5 report the first members of the transition metal chloride-formate family of compounds, which contain linear zig-zag chains of octahedrally coordinated metal atoms linked by [mu]2-Cl and syn-syn formate bridges. These compounds order antiferromagnetically and exhibit metamagnetic transitions. Chapter 6 describes a related set of transition metal formate-chloride compounds that are comprised of helical chains of edge-sharing M2+-centered octahedra. These compounds undergo 3D ferrimagnetic ordering at low temperature, and are rare examples of homospin topological ferrimagnets.

On Friday, February 20, 1980, I had the pleasure to be present at the inaugural lecture of my colleague Jan Reedijk, who had just been named at the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry of Leiden University. According to tradition, the ceremony took place in the impressive Hall of the old University Academy Building. In the course of his lecture, Jan mentioned a number of recent developments in chemistry which had struck him as particularly important or interesting. Among those was the synthesis of large metal cluster compounds, and, to my luck, he showed a slide ofthe molecular structure of [PtI9(C)b]4-. (To my luck, since at traditional Leiden University it is quite unusual to show slides at such ceremonies.) This constituted my first acquaintance with this exciting new class of materials. I became immediately fascinated by this molecule, partly because of the esthetic beauty of its fivefold symmetry, partly because as a physicist it struck me that it could be visualized as an "embryonically small" metal particle, embedded in a shell of CO ligands.

This volume represents the written account of the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Lower-Dimensional Systems and Molecular Electronics" held at Hotel Spetses, Spetses Island, Greece from 12 June to 23 June 1989. The goal of the Institute was to demonstrate the breadth of chemical and physical knowledge that has been acquired in the last 20 years in inorganic and organic crystals, polymers, and thin films, which exhibit phenomena of reduced dimensionality. The interest in these systems started in the late 1960's with lower-dimensional inorganic conductors, in the early 1970's with quasi-one-dimensional crystalline organic conductors. which by 1979 led to the first organic superconductors, and, in 1977, to the fITSt conducting polymers. The study of monolayer films (Langmuir-Blodgett films) had progressed since the 1930's, but reached a great upsurge in . the early 1980's. The pursuit of non-linear optical phenomena became increasingly popular in the early 1980's, as the attention turned from inorganic crystals to organic films and polymers. And in the last few years the term "moleculw' electronics" has gained ever-increasing acceptance, although it is used in several contexts. We now have organic superconductors with critical temperatures in excess of 10 K, conducting polymers that are soluble and processable, and used commercially; we have films of a few monolayers that have high in-plane electrical conductivity, and polymers that show great promise in photonics; we even have a few devices that function almost at the molecular level.

We have synthesized a new ternary nitride, Ca3CrN3 (calcium chromium nitride), from the binary nitrides at high temperature. The refined structure was solved in the Cmcm space group with lattice constants a=8.503(2), b=10.284(2), c=5.032(1), and R=3.9%, R(w)=3.9%. This new structure type consists of sheets of (CrN3)6( - ) planar triangular units and calcium ions. Ca3CrN3 is insulating and paramagnetic with Cr3(+) in the low spin state. This is the first unambiguous example of low spin Cr3(+). Larger than expected antiferromagnetic interactions produce a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility at 245K, even though the shortest Cr-Cr distance is 4.73A.
