Book Description
The synthesis of porous silicon nitride, one of the most promising structural materials for filter at high-temperature applications, from silica/ RF gel composite which was prepared by combining sol-gel and polymerization methods with the use of silica, precursor was investigated. Silica/RF carbon composite was converted into porous silicon nitride via the carbothermal reduction and nitridation. From the results, 3-Amino propyl trimethoxysilane was found to be a suitable silica precursor for the synthesis of porous silicon nitride. It was also found that aging time of silica/RF gel does not affect the porosity of silicon nitride. Solvent exchange with t-butanol and nolar ratio of silicon and carbon that are used in the preparation of silica/RF gel are the major factor affecting in the porosity of silicon nitride. The reaction time for the carbothermal reduction and nitridation is an important factor affecting the agglomeration and sintering of silicon nitride particles.

Book Description
In this book, improvements in the heat resistance of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics using grain boundary control and in plasticity at high temperatures using grain size control in order to reduce the cost of shaping Si3N4 are described. The heat resistance of Si3N4 is improved by mixing a slight amount of sintering additive as an impurity into the original material powder. The author presents his findings on the high heat resistance of Si3N4. The author also develops a new fabrication method for Si3N4 nano-ceramics that produces high plastic formability. The method developed offers two improved points in grinding and sintering processes. The author found that the plastic formability of Si3N4 nanoceramics is dependent on load stress; the results of his research are detailed in this book.

Book Description
"The processing conditions for carbothermal reduction of silica to silicon nitride was found to be sensitive to several key processing parameters: namely the intimacy of mixing of carbon and silica, the temperature, the specific high surface area of carbon, the nitrogen gas purity and the action of the nitrogen gas passing through the reactants." --

Book Description
A combustion synthesis process for the preparation of .alpha.-silicon nitride and composites thereof is disclosed. Preparation of the .alpha.-silicon nitride comprises the steps of dry mixing silicon powder with an alkali metal azide, such as sodium azide, cold-pressing the mixture into any desired shape, or loading the mixture into a fused, quartz crucible, loading the crucible into a combustion chamber, pressurizing the chamber with nitrogen and igniting the mixture using an igniter pellet. The method for the preparation of the composites comprises dry mixing silicon powder (Si) or SiO.sub. 2, with a metal or metal oxide, adding a small amount of an alkali metal azide such as sodium azide, introducing the mixture into a suitable combustion chamber, pressurizing the combustion chamber with nitrogen, igniting the mixture within the combustion chamber, and isolating the .alpha.-silicon nitride formed as a reaction product.
