Bioinorganic Chemistry of Copper
Author: K.D. Karlin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940116875X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 510
Book Description
Bioinorganic Chemistry of Copper focuses on the vital role of copper ions in biology, especially as an essential metalloenzyme cofactor. The book is highly interdisciplinary in its approach--the outstanding list of contributors includes coordination chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, and molecular biologists. Chapters are grouped into major areas of research interest in inorganic copper chemistry, spectroscopy, oxygen chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The book also discusses basic research of great potential importance to pharmaceutical scientists. This book is based on the first Johns Hopkins University Copper Symposium, held in August 1992. Researchers in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and medicinal chemistry will find it to be an essential reference on its subject.

AMINO ACID DERIVED TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES: STRUCTURAL AND CATALYTIC STUDIES.

Pages : 512
Book Description
A group of ligands were designed based on a minimalist reduction of the structure of metalloproteins. It was thought that a modular design with facile synthesis could lead to a new family of privileged ligands. Towards this goal a series of tri-, tetra, and penta-dentate ligands were synthesized. The ligands had a common chiral core based on inexpensive amino acid starting materials. A modular diamine backbone was adjusted to control the size, bite angle and electronic nature of the binding pocket. The ligands were capped with Schiff base imines to provide an initial binding point for the metal and to create steric bulk at one face of the complex. The tetra-dentate ligands were shown to efficiently bind zinc(II), copper((II), nickel(II), and palladium(II). In the case of the penta-dentate ligands the series was extended to cobalt(II), manganese(II) and iron(II). The tri-dentate ligands did not form isolated metal complexes. The structures of these complexes were confirmed by NMR, ESR and X-ray crystallography. The chiral copper complexes were applied to a model asymmetric acylation reaction. The results were disappointing as the reactions showed no stereoselectivity.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Copper(i) Amidinate Complexes

Pages : 87
Book Description
Group 11 transition metals are used daily throughout our bodies and as additives in many common products. One biological function of copper, a group 11 metal, is its use in the Cu A site of cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme found in the last step of cellular respiration. To model this active site, three formamidinate ligands have been examined: 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 2,6- diisopropylphenyl, and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl. The synthesis and structural characterization of these dinuclear Cu(I) complexes is described as well as their redox chemistry with I 2 to afford complexes of mixed-valence which is the normal resting state of the Cu A site. Using EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations on the iodine oxidized products, different electronic structures base d on the formamidinate was found. Additionally, insertion of CS 2 into the copper-nitrogen bonds of the copper(I) formamidinate complexes produces tetra- and hexanuclear clusters based on the steric properties of the ligand

Encyclopedia of Geobiology

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 927
Book Description
The interplay between Geology and Biology has shaped the Earth from the early Precambrian, 4 billion years ago. Moving beyond the borders of the classical core disciplines, Geobiology strives to identify chains of cause-and-effect and synergisms between the geo- and the biospheres that have been driving the evolution of life in modern and ancient environments. Combining modern methods, geobiological information can be extracted not only from visible remains of organisms, but also from organic molecules, rock fabrics, minerals, isotopes and other tracers. An understanding of these processes and their signatures reveals enormous applied potentials with respect to issues of environment protection, public health, energy and resource management. The Encyclopedia of Geobiology has been designed to act as a key reference for students, researchers, teachers, and the informed public and to provide basic, but comprehensible knowledge on this rapidly expanding discipline that sits at the interface between modern geo- and biosciences.

Pages : 383
Book Description
The importance of metals in biology, the environment and medicine has become increasingly evident over the last twenty five years. The study of the multiple roles of metal ions in biological systems, the rapidly expanding interface between inorganic chemistry and biology constitutes the subject called Biological Inorganic Chemistry. The present text, written by a biochemist, with a long career experience in the field (particularly iron and copper) presents an introduction to this exciting and dynamic field. The book begins with introductory chapters, which together constitute an overview of the concepts, both chemical and biological, which are required to equip the reader for the detailed analysis which follows. Pathways of metal assimilation, storage and transport, as well as metal homeostasis are dealt with next. Thereafter, individual chapters discuss the roles of sodium and potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, copper, nickel and cobalt, manganese, and finally molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten and chromium. The final three chapters provide a tantalising view of the roles of metals in brain function, biomineralization and a brief illustration of their importance in both medicine and the environment.Relaxed and agreeable writing style. The reader will not only fiind the book easy to read, the fascinating anecdotes and footnotes will give him pegs to hang important ideas on.Written by a biochemist. Will enable the reader to more readily grasp the biological and clinical relevance of the subject. Many colour illustrations. Enables easier visualization of molecular mechanismsWritten by a single author. Ensures homgeneity of style and effective cross referencing between chapters
