Na primeira parte do livro – Globalização, Política, Sustentabilidade e Meio Ambiente –, o texto traz para o leitor um apanhado das tratativas internacionais sobre os problemas ambientais a partir da Agenda 21 até a Encíclica, e analisa seu papel na discussão teórica e nas negociações dos interesses relativos ao meio ambiente para o ordenamento mundial. Nesta perspectiva, busca avaliar o significado da Encíclica a partir de seus fundamentos teológicos, filosóficos e econômicos, e como as questões por ela expressas se apresentam na realidade concreta das sociedades particularmente mais vulneráveis. Analisa também a implicação e o papel dos interesses do capital financeiro na constituição das discussões e no encaminhamento dos problemas ambientais e do desenvolvimento no sistema internacional. Já na Parte II – Direito Ambiental; Crises Hídricas e Energéticas; Sustentabilidade e Cidadania –, os autores avaliam de maneira crítica e detalhada alguns dos problemas reais dessa natureza no Brasil. A começar pelo incidente crítico da Samarco, analisa-se a questão da mineração de ferro e seus impactos para as comunidades locais e as mudanças na legislação de minas, a política energética brasileira e suas implicações com a política ambiental e, finalmente, o caso da transposição do Rio São Francisco e consequências para a região e o meio ambiente. Acompanha estes artigos uma reflexão acerca das políticas ambientais para o planejamento econômico, com a preocupação do desenvolvimento nos moldes de uma sociedade justa e compatível com a preservação do planeta e da espécie humana.

Matters related to sustainable development, albeit global in nature, are best handled at the local level. This line of thinking is particularly true to the higher education context, where the design and implementation of sustainability initiatives on campuses can demonstrate how a given university translates the principles of sustainable development into practice, at the institutional level. Yet, there is a paucity of specific events where a dialogue among sustainability academics and practitioners concerned with a) research, projects b) teaching and c) planning and infra-structure leading to campus greening takes place, so as to allow a transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral exchange of ideas and experiences on the issues, matters and problems at hand. It is against this background that this book has been prepared. It is one of the outcomes of the “First Symposium on Sustainability in University Campuses” (SSUC-2017) organised by the University of São Paulo in Brazil, Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), the Research and Transfer Centre “Applications of Life Sciences” of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany), and the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP). This book showcases examples of campus-based research and teaching projects, regenerative campus design, low-carbon and zero carbon buildings, waste prevention, and resilient transport, among others. It also demonstrates the role of campuses as platforms for transformative social learning and research, and explores the means via which university campuses can be made more sustainable. Brazil’s soft power path to major power status. The largest country in South America by land mass and population, Brazil has been marked since its independence by a belief that it has the potential to play a major role on the global stage. Set apart from the rest of the hemisphere by culture, language, and history, Brazil has also been viewed by its neighbors as a potential great power and, at times, a threat. But even though domestic aspirations and foreign perceptions have held out the prospect for Brazil becoming a major power, the country has lacked the capabilities—particularly on the military and economic dimensions—to pursue a traditional path to greatness. Aspirational Power examines Brazil as an emerging power. It explains Brazil’s present emphasis on using soft power through a historical analysis of Brazil’s three past attempts to achieve major power status. Though these efforts have fallen short, this book suggests that Brazil will continue to try to emerge, but that it will only succeed when its domestic institutions provide a solid and attractive foundation for the deployment of its soft power abroad. Aspirational Power concludes with concrete recommendations for how Brazil might improve its strategy, and why the great powers, including the United States, should respond positively to Brazil’s emergence.
